¿How to help my kitty and puppy to get along?
Hello all:
I have a 1 1/2 year old Kitty. She's an indoor cat, I live in a very dangerous city (for her) with lots of cars and people who are not nice to cats so we decided to not let her go out. She's never been around other animals. She's a docile and cute kitty, although not very interested in being friends with other creatures (including humans). Yesterday I got a puppy as a present. He's a 2 months old Fox Terrier (smooth). They seem to be getting along although I can tell she would prefer not having him here (he he). My question is: =BFHow do I help them get along? I don't expect them to be friends but I'm hopping they both can be happy, healthy and respect each other. I know a lot of people have cats and dogs living together, and I was wondering if someone can help me. Moka and Milo are very important to me and I want them to be ok but I don't have much experience in this. Thanks Lorena |

Lorena Hi Lorena, An 8-week old fox terrier should be about kitten size ball of energy with little needle sharp teeth. I suspect that your cat will teach that rascal some manners and they will eventually be buddies. Be sure that the cat has lots of places where she will not be accessible to the puppy and that she has access to her litter box and food and water. The puppy will pester the cat and get the cat to chase him. The cat will wait on a chair for the puppy to walk under just so she can bap him with a paw. We've had cats and dogs and they got along fine. Good luck, Annie |

Well, thanks all for your repplies. Things seem to be going fine. The
puppy doesn't pay much attention to the kitty. The kitty follows him sometimes and watches him a lot. She's stuck to her usual rutine, loots of sleeping, lots of time on the window watching kids play, etc. She seems to be fine although she's not her usual self, but I'm hopping she will soon. Annie: Thanks for the advice, it's really helpful. I've taken care of all the things you mentioned and I'll keep them in mind. IBen: I, like you, don't tend to be optimistic. But I'll try to this time, for the sake of my pets. I'll try to do everything I can so they can both be happy. In case one of them begins spending "it's tortured days and nites in hiding", I'll find a home for the puppy. Thanks all Lorena |
