Tweed Chloe, Tigger, CJ, and Snowball had those names when I got them. Fleagor, Mudpie, Millie, Ozy, Dandy, Avery, and Snooch are named after web comics characters. Chubby, Hilde, and Curly were originally named after Wagnerian opera characters, but were renamed. Hilde is simply short for Brunnhilde, but the other two were renamed for physical characteristics: Curly has a strongly curved tail that curls around and touches itself; Chubby was so chubby as a kitten that the vet thought she was pregnant (Hilde is now the chubby one). -- Ted Davis ) |

Tweed I have no idea how Waffles and Pickles got their names, because they were already named when I got them. Nanki-Poo (RB) got his name because he was serenading me on the way home from the shelter and a song from The Mikado popped into my mind. Herbie (RB) got his name because he was such a little love bug. Pyewacket got his name because as a teenager I saw the play Bell, Book and Candle. The main witch in the story had a familiar that was a black cat named Pyewacket. At that time, I never expected to have a cat, but I decided then and there that, if I ever had a black cat, it would be named Pyewacket. About 15 or 20 years ago, that happened. Joy |

That did not work so his name will always be Boyfriend I always chuckle when I think about your story about sitting in the waiting room at the vet's office, when they came out and called "Boyfriend" and you had to get up to bring him in, hoping not to meet anyone's eyes. LOL. How did your cats get their names? Smudge - my ex named her. Smudge has a few, well, smudges of grey fur on her nose, in the middle of a white muzzle. Roxy - As a kitten, she looked just like one of those aliens that you see pictured in UFO stories, with the pointy chins and huge eyes. I wanted to name her something that would refer to the alien thing, and a friend suggested "Roswell" (a town in Nevada which is the site of a supposed alien ship crash in 1947). Roswell quickly became "Rozzy", but I didn't like that, so that soon morphed to "Roxy", and the rest is history. Licky - I had a hard time coming up with a name for this guy. He's so elegant and dapper looking that I wanted to name him after a star of the silver screen. But I'm not a classic movie aficionado, so the names I kept coming up with just didn't mean that much to me. You might remember that I engaged RPCA in a "help me name my kitten" thread. I got a lot of great ideas from that, but none of them stuck. Meanwhile, a friend of mine was badgering me frequently to "name that poor cat, already!" She took it upon herself to make this happen, and would call up with lists of suggestions on a regular basis. I hated most of the names she suggested, but then she said, "Licorice", and I went, "hmmmmmm....!" I like licorice candy. It seemed to suit him. And best of all, I could easily call him "Licky", which was also cute. He's the only one of my 3 who responds immediately to his name, btw. How did you name your cats?
Lacey was Callie when I was trying to rescue her because she's a
calico. DH didn't like that name so I came up with Lacey because she has all the colors of a lacewing butterfly and I was able to keep the ie/ey sound at the end of her name. I thought Barnabus was a female cat - he just looked too pretty to be a female so I called him Miriah until we rescued him and took him to the vet. Then because he was solid black (and I'm a fan of the original Dark Shadows TV show) I named him Barnabus. Meeka is Native American for wise raccoon. She is very smart cat and because she is part Siamese she has the same mask of a raccoon. DH named Rosco and Spagola - well, Spagola ended up with his name because DH suggested it and I said, "That's not a name! We can't name him that" and therefore he became Spagola. Had I said, Oh what a wonderful name, I wonder if it will fit his personality, we probably would have named him something else. After 26 years you'd think I would understand this reverse psychology Julie |

She'd been with me close to two weeks and I'd just been thinking of her as "cat". I never really wanted a cat (shame on me!). And I wasn't entirely sure I was going to keep her. But I decided I couldn't just keep calling her "cat". One day as she was walking away from me in the living room towards the kitchen. I was looking at her, thinking what is your name? The name just popped into my head. I said, "Persia!" and she turned around and came running back to me. Oh! Your name is Persia! And she's answered to it ever since Jill |

-violette, because she wa so shy and there is a cartoon called shrinking
violette. -Tiger because mourice seems so common. -tv because when a kitten he was all the shades of a black and white tv, it fits as if this weren't his name it would have been tater, for couch potato. -OEJ, one eyed jaquline, because she had an eye infection, and i knew a radio host who went by one eyed jack and hates cats. -chester, named by the shelter, dh says his name should be that actor withe jowels that escapes me atm, the vet says his name should be jake, and i call him chester the ingester -barbi, because she was so little and skittish i suggested barberella and DH vetoed that, so she became barbi, -Trudi, for intruder kitty, she answers to trudence, and trudi, trudi, purr machine, done to the shaggy tune. -MH, originally i thought he was a girl because of his meow and behavior, he was so very matted we started calling him matta harri... one day while working on matts, i grabbed yet another matt, pulled it gently away from his body... evidentally NOT gentle enough, he let me in no uncertian terms, it was NOT a mat, and he did NOT intend to let me remove it with a sizzors... so he quickly became mathew harold thanks to dh, as i was at a los, Lee "Christina Websell" wrote in message ... Ginger - named because of his color Eva - named for a short story character Buddy - (a "rescue" cat)), hid under furniture for the first six weeks while I tried to convince him we could be real buddies if he would just cooperate Crystal - had brilliant blue eyes and was too young to be away from her mother when she was given to me. I returned her to her mother and when I took her back 3 weeks later the blue eyes had turned golden but the name stuck. Norma |

Like amny people, the names of the current crew happened organically. Pickle was "Jasper" and Suki was "Indigo" when we adopted them, "Jasper" after the friendly ghost, and "Indigo", because of Suki's blue eyes. Suki became Suki pretty much straight away because she is such a sook. (note, previous owners also thought of Suki as agirl, so its not just me). I even liked the name Indigo, but it just didn't seem to fit. Pickle was going to be "Kunks" there for a while because although he looks 100% white he has a very very *very* slight darker stripe on top of his head and I thought a 'backwards skunk' was funny. We also tried T.D. for a while, but it didn't take. Eventually Cary decided that *his* cat was to be called 'Pickle', and darn it, Pickel answered to 'Pickle' straight away, and thus the name stuck. Previous Cats: Shadow was named Shadow because she always kept in the shadows and seemed somehow haunted. I don't know where she is now (the next set of owners could keep her from straying either, I found out recently, but she's not come back here, and no-one has called me about her chip, so I can only pray that she's found her family... *somewhere*....) IBKFergus was called IBK for "itty bitty kitty" and well "fergus" is a cool name for a cat, even if she was a she-cat and not a he-cat. We called her "Fergs" anyway. Shmoggleberry started off as "Spooky" wich didn't work, then "Moggy" then "Shmoggy" and then because he was so cool he got Shmoggy-berry, which got twisted into Shmoggleberry, and there it stayed. Snoppy was named so because he was just so curious about everything and was 'snooping' into everything Blackie, well, she was black. Other pets: Fluffy: Tried every name we could think for her. We were *adament* she wasn't going to have some silly white-teacup-yippy-dog name like Tiffy or Fluffy. But every time we said we were not going to call her Fluffy, her ears pricked up and qutie often she came over to lick us. Eventually we tested all the names we both as individuals and as a couple we liked, plus Fluffy as the negative control. Fluffy won by a country mile. She was Fluffy if not all that fluffy. Oddly, it suited her, though. Brainy. A name given in irony at a budgie (parakeet) that was forever colliding into walls when in flight. She knew how to fly at top speed, she just didn't know how to turn, slow or slow down. She stopped by either falling to the floor or colliding with a wall. Tough old girl,s he was, considering what she put herself through. She used to drink beer if she got half a chance, then wobble around drunk. She'd eat the 'herbs' that my ex liked to indulge in and then go into great birdsong afterwords before showigh down on the millet treats like no tomorrow and otherwise could draw blood from your fingers if she felt like you deserved a good beaking. She put Shmogg in his place very early. A total biker b*tch, but I loved her anyway Vomit: Not named by us, but was a putrid yellow-green-browny colour adn was going to be terminated because a bird that colour was never going to sell. Previous owner took pity on the thing and offered to save him from being land-fill, and was given Vomit free of charge. Previous owner used to walk over to our place to visit with Vomit sitting on her shoulder. Vomit & Brainy fell in love, and eventually previous owner let us keep Vomit so as not to keep Vomit & Brainy seperate as they pined for each other. No eggs were ever laid, but Vomit died a week after Brainy did (we think she died of cancer - she was about 8 years old) of what could only be considered a broken heart. Boris & Natasha, my first fish (black moors). Named after the characters in Rocky and Bullwinkle, Natasha died very quickly, two days after getting her. Boris died many weeks later. Alas, in my fish-keeping ignorance, I had probably killed them both - Natasha I knew nothing about how to set up, and had simply added tap water to the gravel in the tank and thrown in the fish, and probably killed her throught he chlorine and lack of 'cycling' of the water. Boris by too much love. He'd actually come up to my hand and seemed to enjoy me stroking him. Little did I know that a) my hands are fully of nasty germs and b) handling fish destroys their natural layer of slime, which protects them from nasty germs. Grill (red comet): Coz it was funny to have "Grill the fish". Brutally murdered by two asshats at work who thought pouring him into chemical solutions was 'fun' Fillet, Cutlet, Sushi & StirFry (red comets). Same theme as above. All were dead when I came in one morning, no idea what of. As they'd lived for 4 months in my office without incident, lall seemed bright and cheerful the day before, and all went at the same time, I am guessing either a) someone purposefully killed them like the asshats above (although they'd moved on by that time) or - far more likely - a cleaner just sprayed something like window cleaner or fly spray too near their tank and it was a quick death. I'll never know. Mortis (shebunken): To overcome the gruseome bad luck I'd had with fish thus far, I named this one Mortis, after Death himself. Mortis lived to a ripe old age before I had to re-home him since I was no longer allowed to keep the tank at work. Rachess (betta fish): I have no idea why Cary calls his fish Rachess, he just does. We've had 3 red Rachess (Rachii?) before the current blue incarnation Humans: Cary: I wanted 'Charles', Joel hated 'Charles'. Joel wanted to name him after his late mother 'Kerry'. I hated the name 'Kerry' for a boy (Kerry Packer, anyone?). No other naem suited, but as soon as Joel said 'What about "Cary"?' I was immediately hooked (It helps that we are both big Cary Grant & Cary Elwes fans, but thats *not* who we named him after). Glad we didn't have a girl, though, she would have been named Kaori. We both chose that name very early on and I thought it was a beautiful name then, but really don't like it now. LOL. |
