How on earth does he last out?

Many years ago when we had Isis and Fugazi I was at home alone as Dave
was round a friend's house and for some reason I had to go to my
parents house where I would be staying the night. Dave had called and
said he was going to stay round our friends and Mallet and Helena came
over and offered me a lift back towards my parents- this would be
about 6.30 in the evening. As we were going Helena asked if she could
just use the loo and I said sure but leave the bathroom door open so
the cats can get to their litter trays. The next day Dave met me at
lunchtime and got home about 3.00PM and when he got in he realised
Helena had shut the bathroom door- both cats gave him what he called a
look of desperation and as soon as he opened the bathroom door they
were both in the nearest box with looks of complete and utter relief
as what sounded like Niagra Falls followed. They'd had no access to
the litter tray for 20 and a half hours and they'd had crossed their
legs and not done anything anywhere in the flat

Oh, here he is, back now, I guess he wee'd for ages, poor lad.
He does not seem to have to wee very often, though. I've seen him scratch
at the earth and sit there for ages just relieving himself presumably
because it's too much trouble to go more often..

Many years ago my cat needed to go during a pelting rainstorm. He sat at the
edge of the carport watching the rain until he finally looked back at me and
meowed a protest. Then he squared his shoulders and strode into the rain to
do his duty.

Portrait of a hero.

Wasn't he just!
Poor Boyfie had to do the same thing this morning. We've had very fierce
rain on and off since we got that thunderstorm and after he arose from his
bed to eat his brekkie when he thought he might relieve himself outside he
was horrified to find it was throwing it down.
He went to both doors and meowed plaintively, just in case there was better
weather through the other one. But no.
He then started to to scratch the carpet. This is always a sign that he
thinks I've ignored a request. Like "didn't you hear me the first time?"
Then he rushed upstairs with the zoomies - and rushed back down. I knew he
was desperate but I could not stop the rain.
In the end, he also squared his shoulders, like your cat, Bud and went out.
He came back soaking wet but very relieved. I had to dry him off with a
towel.

I can't understand why he won't use a litterbox.
I know he was previously owned, he had a collar, and a very posh and
expensive one it was too.

Poor lad has to slum it with me now ;-)
I don't think he minds too much.

Yes, a lb filled with cat litter seems to be a no-no for him.
I'm sure he knows what it's for as he 's seen KFC use it for ages, but maybe
earth would be more to his taste.
It's what he thinks is the proper thing to *go* in.
He will wee anywhere there is soil (earth) and he only scrapes a little, but
when it's a more important duty he uses the compost heap and digs down to
Australia

Where do you have the litter box? Is it in a private place with easy access and exit?I am asking this from a cat's point of view only.

He may have had a bad experience in his "previous existence" and does
not feel secure there. Also, is the litter you use the "sand" type or
more like gravel. Does it contain deodorant or is it plain? I am sure
you have considered these things before, but it ,might be worth another
look. Best wishes. MLB

it might be worth a try, violette went out until DH mixed her litter half
litter on the botto,m, dirt on top, then we reduced dirt until she became
used to the litter, Lee

Would you ever consider putting dirt (instead of litter) in the litterbox?
That might look more familiar to him and he might use it as intended.
