Ooooh Lori. *Please* try to find calorie-dense foods without all the
bad
stuff. It's horrible for your heart/vascular system. If you've got
heart failure, sodium isthe very worst thing you can be consuming.
Next would be saturated fat/cholesterol. I couldn't find the
nutritional facts for a
regular McD's bacon-double-cheeseburger, but here's the Angus Bacon
Cheeseburger. The numbers are just unbelievable.
Calories: 790 (that's a good thing for you though!)
Fat: 39 g
Saturated Fat: 17 g
Trans Fat: 2 g
Cholesterol: 145 g
But here's the unbelievable part:
Sodium: 2070!!!

I love burgers, too. You can buy 95/5 hb meat, 2% cheese, lowfat mayo
(or mustard) and still have a decent calorie intake without all the
fat/salt.
Whole wheat buns make it even better. Of course, the *catch* is, you
have to make it yourself. :-(

How about nuts and nut butters? Those are pretty high-calorie, but
from unsaturated fat. If you have a health food store in your area
you might be able to get unsweetened peanut butter or (yum!) almond
butter.

Bread dipped in olive oil is another idea. Very good for your heart.

Can you eat fish? Fish fat is great for you, too.

Sherry, she's trying to *gain* weight, not lose it. 2% cheese and lowfat
mayo isn't what she's looking for. I do agree about the sodium.

Tupperware used to make a hamburger press/freezer storage gizmo... heck, all
of us "kids" got one from my mother for Christmas one year. You buy some
ground beef, ground chuck, ground round, ground turkey, whatever ground meat
you want. Portion it out into about 1/4 lb meatballs, insert it in the
press and press down to make burgers. Snap the containers together. Put
them in the freezer... voila, you have hamburgers whenever you want them.
(And yes, you can cook burgers from frozen... trust me, those fast food
places do it all the time.)

I see these things on eBay and Amazon a lot. They're actually very handy
Thanks, Mom!

and low fat mayo often has gobs of hfcs in it, not good either, best to make
the mayo in cn's case, if i lived close we would fatten her right up, full
fat cheese, if there is an aldi near here can be had for cheap also, their
natural cheese are not only the real thing, they are cheap as well, and lots
of nice flavors like, dill havarti, guda and so on, Lee

Well, the funny thing is that when they did the heart catheter they found
not a single bit of plaque, strictures or and damage to my arteries, and I
had too *LOW* blood pressure (they would withhold my pain meds in the
hospital until my blood pressure was over 80 (the top number, I forget
whether it systolic or histolic). "Normal" blood pressure for me is 90/60
and they'll often have a hard time reading that (or don't believe their eyes
since they'll invariably take it two or three times before writing it down.
So salt is not a factor and there is no evidence of harm from saturated fat.
They think now is that it was because of the RSD and pushing myself too hard
that brought about the heart attack. More damaging to my heart/health is
weighing on 89.5 pounds (as of this morning).

Not that I think eating healthy is *bad*, only that it doesn't matter to the
doctor or nutritionist *what* I eat as long as I get a lot more protein into
my body.

Sort of right. But there's no blockage. They said I had failure of the
muscles on the left side of my heart which caused blood to pool in the left
ventricle and form a clot. Yesterday the cardiologist ran some more tests
but they said the clot could dissolve in time and the muscles repair
themselves, hopefully.

But I am very grateful for your concern, it's nice to know that friends
care.

Oh, okay. I remember a reference you made to "my very badly damaged
heart." The problem with salt isn't just BP, if your heart can't pump
well,
you're going to end up with edema.

Which is why I'm surprised that nobody said word one about my suggestions
for high-calorie foods full of unsaturated fats. Vegetable fats (and fish)
are the best sources of heart-healthy calories.

My brother was in the fast food business for many years (Hardees). He
said a lot of the quality in such places depends upon how strictly the
"quality control" is maintained by the franchise, or franchise-owner.
You find that's true with many "chain" type restaurants, not just the
fast food variety. Marie Callendar can be very spotty, even in the same
city - excellent in one location, barely edible in another - even though
the menu is supposedly the same. Good Earth is very different from city
to city - even the menu is not the same everywhere. On the other hand,
I've eaten in any number of Olive Garden restaurants, in several
different cities. They serve the same menu everywhere, the quality of
the food is consistently high, and the service consistently good.
(Consequently, when I'm in a strange city looking for a quick meal, I
look for an Olive Garden, because I know I'll get a good meal at a
reasonable price.)
