I'm not a Brit, but I'll butt in anyway...

When you check the spelling (or anything else, for that matter) it's
with a "ck", but when you pay using a cheque, it's with a "qu". They're
both pronounced in the same way, only spelled differently. Just like
where / wear / were / ware, that mean different things when spelled
differently.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
