Help With Sick Cat After Spay!!!!
My little baby, Bella, was spayed on Dec. 23rd. She did OK after the
surgery, but went downhill about 5 days later. Her incision was swollen and she was very lethargic for a day. I took her to the vet who found her temperature to be 106.1!!!! They admitted her overnight and gave her fluids and antibiotics. The next morning the vet called to say the swelling came down slightly enough for them to feel a hole on her abdomen wall, so they needed to reopen her and fix that. Her temp had dropped to 104. They ran blood and urine tests and didn't really come up with much. The tests showed infection, although the doctor said there was no inflammation when she went back inside. After surgery they wanted to keep her for the weekend (New Year's weekend, so they were closed). I went to visit her and ended up taking her home (her temp had dropped to 102.9 by this time). She was miserable there, and I knew she would be more comfortable at home, getting 24 hour care from Mommy. I gave her the antibiotics (Baytril) and her temperature was normal all weekend (fluctuating between 100.5 and 101.5). Today it raised again. The last time I checked it was 103.6. She's also not eating as well as she has been the last couple of days - and when she does, she will only eat from my finger. An area of the incision is swollen again. She vomited a couple times today as well. Other than that, she's acting fine - just resting alot which is expected. I know she is still sore and uncomfortable. I feel like I'm going through the exact same thing all over again, and I'm very worried. Why is this happening? Are infections and high fevers normal after surgery? Could she be allergic to the sutures? Why does she do OK for a few days and then start to go downhill?? Please help! I am feeling very distraught and helpless over here. |

Lethargy & soreness are common after surgery... The rest, as far as I know, is not. Sounds like the infection has taken a deeper hold & your kitty may need more vet time... After she's recovered from the infection & is off antibiotics, I can offer some advise on boosting the cat's immune system back up... Good Luck, get back to your vet. Vet, first thing in the morning. & this time I would advise letting them keep he in for as long as they deem necesary. I am sure you'd rather have a live kitty for years to come than a happy one at home for a few days? -- I.P.Freely |

... Thank you for all the replies. Today her temp rose to 105.9 so I took her back to the Vet. She's currently on supportive care until she's better. I hope this is all over soon. Oh No! Poor kitty :-( Keep us posted . We're all pulling for her. -- -Kelly kelly at farringtons dot net "Wake up, and smell the cat food" -TMBG |
