Default OT - Help! Gift suggestions urgently needed

Two of the newsgroups I subscribe to have a Secret Santa gift exchange every
year. It is a lot of fun. The gifts aren't supposed to cost more than $15,
and, since people live all over the world, it's good to give something that
represents the place you live.

I live in Southern California. Both of my groups are for people over 50.
The names I drew on the two groups just happen to be brothers, both of whom
live in England. I need to buy and mail the gifts this coming week for
sure. I have already got a (different) photo calendar for each of them.
What else can I send them that is representative of California?

One of them writes poetry, which is usually rather dark. The other recently
had double bypass surgery. Both of them have a slightly twisted sense of
humor.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Well, I can't help with a Californian suggestion, but I am a Brit and we are
almost obsessively interested in the weather. Anything weather-related
would go down a treat. Especially something which would help us measure it,
like a minimum/maximum thermometer.

Thank you, Tweed. That's something I hadn't thought of.

Not sure of representing California... is that a hard and fast rule? I was
thinking perhaps music CD's. My LLL is (eeek!) 59 and much enjoys music
from films, particularly the works of James Horner and Thomas Newman. Or
Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams. Going back further, Leonard Bernstein...

I just ordered a CD for John for Christmas; the music is from an old classic
film, my favourite ghost & love story, 'The Ghost & Mrs. Muir' starring Gene
Tierney and Rex Harrison, music composed and conducted by Bernard Herrmann.
(amazon.com)

No, it doesn't have to represent California. Music CD's would be a good
idea, but I'm not sure of their tastes or what they already have - or even
if they have CD players. I can't ask, because they aren't supposed to know
who the gift is from until they open it.

Some people mail their gifts to someone else to mail, so the recipient can't
figure out who it came from. Since I drew both brothers, and they live
semi-close to each other, and will be seeing each other around Christmas,
I'm going to mail each brother's gift to the other one. I've already asked
them about it and they agreed. They will take off the outer wrappings and
give the gifts to the other one.

So what? It's a gift. A freebie. No one can actually complain about a
free gift from a stranger on a newsgroup! Hell, send them The Beatles. Or,
here's a thought, The Eagles: 'Hotel California' Fantastic CD!

Eeep - Joe Walsh!!! (I have a secret crush on him!)
Pppppppppppt to Don Henly & Glenn Frey (OK, Glenn is ALOT bettter then Don).
But at least I was able to say that I chatted online with Joe! What's
really funny is that it happened a few hears ago, and when I told people
that I did so, they thought I said Jope Wallace, whom was a coworker of mine
at the time. Than and only about 3 people Itold know *who* Joe Walsh was!

Well when you become as popular as they are and/or become a musician of
either Don or Glenn's caliber -not to mention Joe Walsh or the other
members of the Eagles- perhaps you can speak with some level of
validation otherwise shut the F*** up! I haven't seen seen YOU listed on
a US or worldwide concert bill lately as far as I know - otherwise
inform us all otherwise so we can see you in person if possible - or
shut up! To keep this in perspective I played electric guitar for
several years before I found out my talents were in other areas -
specifically computer programming. At least I tried and realized my
talent was in other areas.

So tell us MMJ what group you are in that anyone would recognize on a
national and/or worldwide level?
