[OT] Hurricane Isabel tree damage
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1 My sister, Mary, lives in Richmond, Virginia. When Hurricane Isabel went through there last week, her power was off for five days. She sent me a link to someone else's web page showing how bad the fallen trees were in the Richmond neighborhood known as the Fan, where she used to live. When you see these pictures, you will understand why close to 4 million people were without electricity after the storm came through. http://home.comcast.net/~idzn/IIBHTML/IIBHome.HTML4 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGPfreeware 7.0.3 for non-commercial use http://www.pgp.com iQA/AwUBP3T6YTMYPge5L34aEQJ8xQCfWFCyQ1VXoi4//7F0dJTDuTY2HfgAmwf7 TxI/8O7Ru8HES189t34V/qsA =qQ69 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- John F. We had trees coming down everywhere; uprooted. Old trees uprooted. I have a lot of pictures of damage from the storm but I haven't posted them yet. I also have some amazing pictures of Annapolis under water on the main streets and storefronts. My power was out for 5 days, also. Some people are still without even now. This area is just not equipped for a major storm like that. I hope the power companies have their eyes wide open now. |

In Netscape and Mozilla it shows up as the page source code. In looking at the source I can't see why. |

what a sobering set of photos, especially in contrast to the captions.

I live in a similar neighborhood outside of Wash DC and close to
Annapolis. We had trees coming down everywhere; uprooted. Old trees uprooted. It's sad, isn't it? I must have a real affinity for trees, because I practically mourned for the landscape after the tornado. The trees that were left were stripped of all branches and bark. They mostly died. After the bombing of the federal building here, tree surgeons really fought to save a tree that was next to the building. They did. And now they call it "The Survivor Tree" and sell seedlings from it. It's a real symbol of how life really does go on. My power was out for 5 days, also. Some people are still without even now. This area is just not equipped for a major storm like that. I hope the power companies have their eyes wide open now. That's like us in the winter. When we *do* get ice & snow. we are ttotally paralyzed because the county doesn't own the right equipment and we Okies just flat don't know how to drive in it. Except for the proverbial "Hey ya'll, watch this." rednecks with their 4-wheel drivess. Hope your city get back to normal soon. Sherry |

Whenever Nashville is hit by an ice storm, there always seems to be a disproportiionate number of pickup trucks and SUVs among the vehicles that end up in ditches. I suspect this is because the drivers are finding out the hard way that, while 4-wheel drive makes it less likely that you will lose traction while accelerating or going at a steady rate of speed, it doesn't give you any particular advantage while braking (since everyone has 4-wheel braking). The 4-wheel drive vehicles tend to be driven faster on slippery surfaces than the 2-wheel drive vehicles, and thus are more likely to end up off the road in a ditch. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGPfreeware 7.0.3 for non-commercial use http://www.pgp.com iQA/AwUBP3dDvjMYPge5L34aEQL17ACggTTt/hlNOrpWtDbqOToJfbXmczoAnjDh sLtapeRIRabrM/wq0oQlDv34 =XuUG -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- John F.
