Default TV watching positions

Have you ever looked at how your cats positon themselves for tv watching (at
least if they actually do)?

I noticed Peepers watching Judge Judy tonight and was amazed at how he had
arranged himself. He had assumed a sphinx position along the front of a
seat cushion on the loveseat. It was really unusual to see his hair hanging
down half the depth of the cushion ( the wrong end of the cusion was forward
so that the square rear edge was forward as it would never have worked with
the rounded front edge). As soon as it was over he went into curled up with
top head on cusion position until some cartoons came on and he went back to
the new tv watching position. I think I am going to call this the "Judge
Judy" position.

It got me to thinking about some of the other tv watching poses I've seen
him assume for long periods. There is the twisted neck position from the
top of the scratching post when he watches cartoons (animations reallly)
from there ( I think he likes the simple shapes and large movements). He
sits upright in what I call the "I am royal" position facing largely away
from the screen with his head turned back to face the screen. Nature shows
(with birds preferred but other small animals can be watched) leads to him
sitting on the floor directly in front of the tv in the "I am royal"
position with his head turned up to look directly at the screen. How he
keeps his head turned so long for either of these without discomfort is
beyond me.

The "I am royal" position is the basic erect sitting position with the
curved back and forward facing with the neck rising up rather than forward.
I think it is a really elegant sitting position.

Well, even though I watch Judge Judy, myself, I'd agree that Judge Judy
qualifies as a cartoon. Funny how he has a position for each type of
show. Mine just like to sit on the bed and watch whatever I've got on.
They don't like daytime TV very much, but are really into action
programing. They love Funniest videos, action shows, and commercials.
It has to have a lot of movement to keep the furkids happy.

Pam S. who's had as many as three cats sitting in a row watching down
hill skiing.

I certainly understand not watching daytime tv, as mine are basically dead
to the world from about 9:00 AM till 3:00 PM. Seeing three cats in a row
watching tv does sound like a hoot though.

They love down hill skiing, speed skating, and the luge, but not figure
skating. Surprisingly enough, they don't like auto racing. Sorry Julie.

Persia pays absolutely no attention to the television. She curls up next to
me in the same position regardless of what I am watching. My lovebird,
Peaches, on the other hand wants to be a judge on 'American Idol'. She
chirps loudly when she likes the singing; remains silent or scolds if she
doesn't like it. Persia just purrs and puts her head on my knee

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to Stinky's viewing, except
nature programs are sure-fire, especially anything with lizards. He
also got very excited once watching a pride of lions stalking. OTOH,
he also likes baseball.

Single-mindedness is all very well in cows or baboons; in an animal
claiming to belong to the same species as Shakespeare it is simply disgraceful.

When I first bought my surround-sound home theatre setup, the first movie
Jazz and I watched was TWISTER. We sat on the sofa like we always do when
watching tv. At the scene when that tanker was hurtling towards the actors
in the truck and making that god-awful noise, Jazz jumped 3 feet in the air
and high-tailed it out of the room. He never did finish the movie as I
recall.

Then we watched our favorite tv show, Xena: Warrior Princess. Everytime Xena
threw her chakram and the sound travelled around the room, Jazz would jump
down and run around to the back of the sofa to see if he could pick it up
and return it to her. He never did figure out that the chakram ALWAYS flew
back to Xena anyway, so he never had a chance of getting it. grin.

Lots of movement. Right now Huey is watching a John Wayne movie. Rio
Lobos, I think.
