HOW TO FATTEN A CAT UP(AS OPPOSED TO REDUCING ONE'S WEIGHT)
"sheelagh" wrote in message ps.com... I have one cat that has just got over a nasty case of ringworm after her owner neglected to tell me it came as an added extra free bonus..!!You have no idea how ungrateful I am towards her..believe me?!This is irrelevant really, the point is,I have tried all sorts of diets and potions to try & get her to gain a bit more weight-including science plan, kitten food, wet food, dry food fresh meat for extra protien...conditioning tablets, protien supplements and even minced beef mixed with oily fish, but none of them seem to have made any difference at all.Since bringing her home, she has gained the sum total of 250grams in a space of 4months.Other than the lack of weight gain, she has had good blood results,& no lurgy's found-seems perfectly happy, but looks like a bag of bones, poor thing. We have a multi cat household with several varieties of cats including hienz 57's,birmans & a couple of ragdolls.Compared to even the stray we took in a day or so ago,she looks neglected at a quick glance.Being a Birman, her natural build should be quite solid & stocky. But this is not the case with her, she looks half starved!Has anyone else ever encountered a problem like this before,& if so, how did you deal with it,& make it work for you? S. First, have you discussed this with your veterinarian? She may have problems in addition to those caused by ringworm. Second, Duffy was very thin when I adopted him. He had been in a shelter for several months, and they said he did not eat well. (Who can blame him?) I used Innova canned, and he steadily gained weight. Once he reached his normal weight, I changed to a diet that consists primarily of Wellness canned plus some Innova Evo canned. MaryL |

If this cat has an appetite, and has been offered all the things the OP mentioned, something is wrong if she still looks like a bag of bones after four months. Even Biskit, who was truly a bag of bones, beefed up quite well after that much time. Sherry |

S. First, have you discussed this with your veterinarian? She may have problems in addition to those caused by ringworm. Yes,I got the initial bag of science Plan from her when I took Tiggy to her about the wieght issue. It was about 2weeks after the ringworm was diagnosed,so she put it down to that at the time. But In my gutt,I have a feeling that you could be right.Yesterday after diner was cooked,I took the rest of the meat off the carcus, then shared it between the cats.Tiggy wolfed her's down & gthen returned to her bead & went to lie straight back down again.(when the others started to preen themselve's,stretched, took some water, used the box ect). Second, Duffy was very thin when I adopted him. He had been in a shelter for several months, and they said he did not eat well. (Who can blame him?) MaryL I found out from the Rspca, several weeks after we got her, that she had been housed in a rabbit run for over 2months.Whether this has any baring or not,I can not say?It must have had some effect on her,&I am not sure if this could it have been where she picked up the ringworm? The two brands of food that you tell me about are unfamiliar to me(we live in the Uk).I wonder if it might be worth calling the cat protection league to see what they use in their own shelter? But as you point out yourself-it might not the be the best place to find out! She eats pouches of whiskers kitten meat,Royal Canin kitten dry complete,as well as a protion of minced beef every other day, mixed with an oily fish(makrel presently). She has conditioning tablets with extra protien & also any tit bits I happen across, like the turkey yesterday. The clinic opens again tomorrow,so I think I will give her a call to see if she can fit Tiggy in to her schedule.Something feels incorrect. S. Ps:If anyone knows of a calorie booster available in the Uk, can you let me know about it please? |

Have you checked her for internal parasites? I would suspect tapeworm if her appetite is hearty and she's losing weight. Tapeworm is easy to spot if you know what you are looking for (tiny rice-fleck-looking worm segments around the anus, especially at night or right after she poos), and easy to treat. -- Lynne http://picasaweb.google.com/what.the.hell.is.it/ |

Even if none are found, it is a good idea to take a stool sample to the vet for a parasite check. The sample should be as "fresh" as possible! Don't buy over-the-counter preparations for parasites. They can be ineffective and sometimes dangerous. Be sure to get the medication from your vet. MaryL |
