Tinley Park Dog Owner Calls Cops -- On a Cat

The cat now can't get out of a shelter until there's proof it had a rabies
shot.

A small black-and-white pet cat so terrorized a Tinley Park resident and his
70-pound Labrador that the man called the cops, police said.
The man emerged from the cat attack on 71st Court unscathed "due to him
wearing pants," police said, but his dog wasn't so lucky. The Lab was left
cut and bloodied, the man reportedly told police, and had to be cleaned up
when he got back home.

An officer went to the man's house and checked the yellow Lab out but "could
not see any redness or wounds on the dog's face," police said.

The 33-year-old man told how he had been walking his dog on 71st when an
"unknown black cat" darted off a porch and "attacked both him and his
9-year-old male yellow Labrador," police said.

The cat weighs about 10 to 12 pounds, according to police.

A neighbor told police about a resident who "does own an aggressive black
cat that runs at large every day," but no one answered the door at her
house. The dog-owner claimed the "cat had been aggressive for a while,"
police said, but conceded "this was the first time it made contact with him
and his dog."

An officer later tracked down a "black cat with a white chest and white
paws," police said. "As (the officer) neared the cat it got onto its back
and raised all four paws up in the air."

The cat was wearing a pink collar and a tag imprinted with the name "Kelli"
and a telephone number. It was not clear if Kelli is the name of the cat or
its owner.

An officer reportedly called the number and left a voicemail message, then
transported the cat to the People's Animal Welfare Society, a no-kill
shelter. The officer "advised the cat could not be released prior to
providing proof of a rabies vaccine."

That's such a sweet looking cat.

The dog owner probably exaggerated, but I'm a cat person so I'm on the
cats side. I had a calico who would act all friendly to people until it
laid on it's back for them to pet her stomach, then, it shredded their hand.

We once had a cat who would let you pet his stomach, but when he'd had
enough, he gave no warning. He used all claws and teeth to announce it.
He didn't get very many tummy rubs.

Cats CAN terrorize dogs, when they've a mind to. One friend of mine had
a next-door neighbor whose miniature poodle was frequently put outside
to yap and disturb the entire block. My friend's twenty pound marmalade
tomcat would periodically decide he'd had enough, go over and beat up on
the dog, and the neighborhood enjoyed peace and quiet until the dog
forgot, and needed another lesson.

Another friend had a fairly large tiger-stripe who had a neighbor's two
boxers so terrorized they'd pull their owner across the street, rather
than walk pass her house. (The cat would lie in wait in the hedge, then
leap out at the dogs when they came past.)

Perhaps the same rule about petting strange animals uninvited holds as
true for cats as it does for dogs. I like dogs, but would never pet one
without letting it sniff my hand and indicate it was willing to let me
touch it.

Cats CAN terrorize dogs, when they've a mind to.

We got our Marblecake because as a 12-week-old kitten she was beating
the hell out of her family's Labrador-sized dog. Her littermate sister
was fine with it but Marblecake was a Cat with Attitude from birth.

Now she just beats the hell out of her son Ollie instead.

I guess the rules are different in Illinois. In California, if a pet animal
bites someone, it has to be quarantined for 10 days. That's because the
animal will start to exhibit clear symptoms of rabies within 10 days of
the first incident of aggression. If those symptoms don't develop, then the
animal is released from quarantine.

Oooooo, scary! Very aggressive and dangerous.

and a telephone number. It was not clear if Kelli is the name of the cat or

Whoever was confused by this is not an animal person! Who puts their own name
on a cat collar? (OK, maybe they would put their full name so you could look
them up in a phone book, but a first name isn't very helpful.) It's obviously
a girlkitty named Kelli.
