What an SOB!!!!!!!!!

He'll have to answer for it someday. I believe in karma and in the principle that
what goes around, comes around. He'll have to answer either to his child, to the
cat himself in the world beyond, or to God him/herself. YOU JUST DON'T DO THIS KIND
OF THING TO LIVING BEINGS! Sorry for yelling. But human or animal, you just don't
do this. May both the child and the cat move forward to better things!

Blessed be,

Baha

The shelter manager called me today with an outrageous story. I just have to
vent this here. A man adopted a cat for his daughter about six months ago. He
showed up today to turn it back.
He explained that the reason is that he "warned" his daughter if she didn't get
her grades up, he would take away her cat. She got a bad grade in Math, and he
brought us the cat.
I just can't believe that this father sees the cat just like the TV, stereo, or
nintendo or something. Like a possession he can just throw out as punishment
for bad grades. Makes me so mad.

That's really awful! This clod is unfit to be around animals, if he can take
his daughter's cat away as a punishment. It would be one thing if the girl
wasn't taking care of the cat, or was cruel to it, but bad grades is
probably the worst reason I've ever heard to turn a cat over to a shelter.
Does he care if the cat gets euthanized because he's an idiot? Or
permanently placed in another home, preventing his daughter from ever seeing
her companion again? (Not to mention how stressful it must be for the cat!)
How terrible for the daughter who must miss and be worried about her cat's
fate, and feeling guilty (however undeservedly) for her part in the
situation. Also a terrible message about animals being expendable. I'll bet
it will be a long time before she forgives or forgets what her father has
done. May he rue the day!

Don't worry, he will. Because someday he is going to be old, and his daughter
won't be there. Do I sound harsh, judgmental? Perhaps. But the SOB has already
taught her that living beings have no worth; he has taught her that not only
has a cat no worth, but his own child has no worth. He'll reap what he's sown.

Blessed be,

Baha

Social workers everywhere will tell you that using pets as leverage for
control or threatening to do them harm, is a sign of abusive behavior. The
man's a child abuser. It's a hot button for me, too. The cat'll be better
off without this human monster around. As for the child, I sincerely hope
that she will recover, and go on to human beings who deserve her. Her father
doesn't. Pray for this girl, please. Girls who suffer abuse frequently end
up in abusive relationships when grown. In the name of God, may the cycle
end with this child!

Exactly. Talk about an irrelevant punishment.

Actually, it sounds like a power struggle, like "Just you try to goof
off in school, and you'll see what I do to you." It's like he's assuming
she's doing badly on purpose. (And even if she is - she's a CHILD! Does
he have to act like a child in response??)

What does a cat have to do with grades? Did the cat make her get a
bad grade in math?

Anyway, why do parents think they can force their children to get good
grades by threatening or punishing them? Did he ever think of, maybe,
*helping* her (or getting her some help) with math??

Sorry, this is a hot button for me. My dad was a bit like this - he
would make promises, and then threaten to break them if we didn't do
what he told us to. But even he knew better than to use the family
pets as leverage!
