OT Calif. City Bans Smoking in Public Places

Actually, after I had one of my cataract surgeries, one of the stitches
worked out enough that it was painful. My opthalmologist
(ofphtalmologist, heck with it - EYE DOCTOR) was licensed for topical
cocaine and used it to deaden the eye while he pulled the offending
stitch. This was '85 or so.

There's lots of stuff that is illegal for recreastional use that has a valid
and legal use in medicine. Example - diamorphine, which is heroin.

(They even enforced it - a lot of jazz musicians regularly

Veering *way* off topic, but "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" wasn't
about LSD. :-)
It was inspired by a drawing by Julian Lennon when he was a small
child.

That's as may be, but its sub-text was recognized as being
an endorsement of LSD - ask anyone who lived through those
times.

You're right, of course. I've not had to jobhunt for nearly
thirty years, and jobs were so plentiful in the 1950's, when
I was first joining the labor market, that if there were
ANYTHING about it I didn't like, I simply quit and found
another.

Not always. Federal legislation was in 1937. State laws varied.
You could buy over the counter preparations with marijuana 100
years ago.

"Over-the-counter"? Are you sure you're not confusing it
with cocaine? Or opium? I didn't know marijauna COULD be
used in any form but smoking it! (And of course the "pot
brownies" mentioned in stories about the 1960's.)

LOL, a true cat slave. No problem watching the wife get tortured, but

I was very glad and relieved when smoking was banned from all public
places in Slovenia a few years ago. Before that I worked for a year in
an office with a woman who chain-smoked. I would open the window and she
would close it
For a while after the ban on smoking all went well. Those who smoked at
work could go to a place designated for smoking (usually a room) but
could not smoke everywhere else anymore. Restaurants had to separate
smokers and non-smokers. But slowly things changed back to the way they
were before the ban and now if I want to go have a coffee with some
friends who like me do not smoke I can hardly find a place where people
are not allowed to smoke. And since my father and my grandfather both
died of cancer because they smoked I really feel strongly about that.

They don't have to; smoking is legal. I assume cigarettes are
cheaper, and since possession of illegal drugs is already criminal, it
probably makes it a bit easier to cross the line from non-violent to
violent crime.

Ewww. I don't know what I'd do in that situation. How horrible.

But slowly things changed back to the way they were before the ban and
now if I want to go have a coffee with some friends who like me do not
smoke I can hardly find a place where people are not allowed to smoke.

That's too bad. Maybe you can look on the bright side: you spend less
money if you don't go to those places!

discipline small children in the back seat while driving down the
road! But the one that stands out, that I'll never forget -- I
actually saw a woman reading a paperback book while she was driving
down the street. That's just stupid...it made me wonder what
exactly would be on the ticket that she'd get if a cop saw her.

I saw that on a regular basis while commuting in northern Virginia.

My personal favorite(?): someone eating soup with a spoon while

Long before the current attitudes toward smoking, I had a state sales tax
auditor in my office. One of the first things he did was light a cigarette
and when I frowned he informed me that if I objected to the smoke I should
leave.

Wish I'd been in the position at the time to tell him where to go and how to
get there.

Charlie has always hated second hand smoke. When he worked in the Pentagon,
everyone he worked with knew what would happen if a smoker had the poor
judgment to set an ashtray on his desk. (They usually break when they hit
the wall)
