*!VERY!* strong opinion/rant warning

I was blown away by last year's Fox's TV hit show, "Glee". I even watched
reruns all summer (and I'm not usually a rerun watcher - preferring
something I like a lot less just because it's new). It's on right now and I
am totally, completely, utterly disgusted to the point where I think I'm
going to be sick to my stomach. The show is whoring itself out to Britney
Spears - just one song after another, one scene after another showing teens
bumping and grinding and taking off their clothes, teen sex, I can't believe
anyone would put this filth on at 7PM TV "prime time". Somebody gag me down
to my toes disgusting with a ladle!! I'm at the point where I'm considering
not ever watching this show I once liked ever again. I don't think I've
ever seen such perverse crap in my entire life - there are no words to
express my distaste, but I just felt the need to express this feeling.
After the past few years especially, to feature and promote that filthy
wh*re as a role model to teens for an entire hour-long television show is
appalling to me.

That is sad! It's hard enough to find a TV show you really like. It's a
shame when it's ruined. The only hopeful thing is that from what I heard, I
had the impression that her appearance on the show was a one-time thing.
Maybe it will go back to being good, if that is the case.

Yep, I'm the grandmother to that demographic and that's *why* I think it's
so disgusting. Who would want their child, much less their grandchild to
model themselves after that trash - I think I'd have to kill them first! It
offends me down to me toes. What used to be a nice, sweet musical show has
prostituted itself horrifically. It used to defend all the teenaged "geeks"
out their who have long needed a "voice" in media. What was sweet has now
turned nasty to me.

I sure hope they clean it up again. As I told Yowie, one of the reasons I
liked it so much was that it gave a "voice" to all the geeky, angst-ridden
teens out there who have always felt disenfranchised. This episode has
taken that ethic and turned it on its ear. It's sad, it really is sad.

I haven't watched this show, so I can't comment on the specifics, but
from reading the above, I'd say it sounds exploitative and lowest-common-
denominator entertainment. But perverse? "Filth"?? Those words are *way*
over the top. Sex is not perverse - much less filthy. The mere fact that
teenage girls have sexual feelings/needs does not make them whores. That
view of women is more than a little old-fashioned - "good girls say no",
and all that bullsh*t. Sure, kids should be responsible about sex, but
that responsibility falls on both boys and girls.

Now, if you want to talk about degradation by bad *music*, that's another
matter altogether.

I was a little surprised at tonight's show, too, but seriously, they have
done the same before. They devoted a whole show to Madonna, and back in the
day she was more controversial than Brittney. I never saw anyone offended
by that.

All things controversial today will be passé tomorrow.

Brittney isn't to my taste either, but I, too, am not hte right demographic.

My heroes are the ones of the 80's.

Can you imagine the bru-ha-ha if Boy George - that 'out' cross-dressing
homosexual was on (for example) Saved by the Bell? Or if the young Madonna
with her mega-slut persona had turned up on Degrassi High? There would have
been conniptions in my parent's generation too.

Brittney, for all her stage-managed and tragic life, is not so much a role
model as a typical of what modern 'music heroes' are about, much like Lady
GaGa, Madonna, The Spice Girls, Kurt Cobain, Samantha Fox, George O'Dowd,
Syd Vicious, David Bowie, Elvis etc etc going back into the mists of "Rock
and Roll" time - the kids think these 'artists' are the bees knees, and the
grownups roll their eyes at the "talent" of the so called "stars" versus the
"hype" that surrounds them. Much like most of the artists above, I don't
think Brittney is a talentless hack, but her PR (IMHO) grossly outweighs her
actual ability.

And what is Hollywood story of the Geek? Unlike Cormier's _The Chocolate
War_ which painted a bleak, yet quite realistic, portrayal of what happens
when an underdog/geek tries to go against the school heirachy, Glee is not
Real Life but is fiction designed to rake in the largest amount of ratings
posisble. I haven't watched much of it, but if the story of The Geek(s) as
per Hollywood is followed, and I have no reason to believe it wouldn't, then
the Geek, by definition, has to slowly become that which he or she hated,
that is, cool and popular. Its all about the transformation, all about the
slow metamorphisis of ugly duckling into beautiful swan. Hollywood is not
about the geek that managed to survive highschool (just), get a geek job,
and lead a geek life. Thats boring and all too realistic. It is how Geek
Made Good.

Glee no doubt wrote in Brittney because shes a) mostly contemporary b)
relatively cheap, considering her stalled career c) her presence will
(hoperfully) get ratings and that d) her agent encouraged her to do a spot
on a popular TV show as part of the PR excercise to get her onto the front
page of the gossip mags again, ie, to renew her 'brand'. Glee will no doubt
try and find other known but not currently super-famous stars to be 'guests'
on the show - it gives the show 'cred' and does no harm to the B-grade
star's career either. At least whilst Glee remains popular.

Sucks to be old and cynical, I guess.

Yoiwe
