Default Hair Problem

Hi,

I am just wondering if anyone out there might be able to give me some
insight on my cat's problem.

Oreo is a shorthair tuxedo cat. He is almost 11 years old now.
Lately I have found that he hair on his back near the tail get really
lumpy. I tried to give him baths, and brush him, those lump just
wouldn't untangle.

I am just wondering if it could be some sort of disease or is it
normal??

He is an indoor cat, never go outside and he is a bit overweight
(18lbs).

Thank you,
Oreo

This happened with Tiger - who is long haired. I had to take him to the
vet to get his back "shaved" to remove the mats. You might try a
grooming comb but if it gets caught in the mats you may have to take
Oreo to a groomer - or a vet if he won't hold still for a groomer.

This is exactly the same as with Tiger. It felt like the hair was glued
together. When I tried to comb it out, it seemed to hurt him. I tried
using electric clippers myself but they wouldn't cut through the mats
and Tiger would not hold still (He is a 19 pound strong boy), The vet
had to sedate him to use their clippers. I will try to comb him
frequently now to prevent a recurrence.

The thing is I look at the lump hair more closely it looks more like
he has glue or something sticky in those 2 areas that make the hair
all lump up together.

I think when cats get older, they don't groom themselves as much and you say
he's overweight, so that would also make it difficult for him to groom himself.
We have this situation with my 17 year old cat, Cory (also a tuxedo with
medium length hair). We comb him almost daily (he doesn't like it when we hit
a mat) but he still gets them. It seems like someone on this ng said something
you can put on these mats to sort of smooth them out (like conditioner) so they
would comb out easier. It was something unusual, I think, like peanut butter,
maybe? That sounds kinda messy, tho, so maybe that wasn't it.
