With Halloween coming up, best not to adopt out any black cats until
November. Some people may want a black cat as a Halloween party prop
and dump the cat later.

Thank you for this reminder. Fortunately, in England, this is not something
we have to worry about. We do not abuse black cats at Halloween.
There is no stigma attached to black cats here.

I used to support the month-long blackout but not anymore. I believe
that the black-cat problem is about 90% myth--at least here. And
refusal to adopt for an entire month isn't fair to the cats. Far too
many of them miss out on what would be a good home. It doesn't hurt to
err on the side of caution, and be extremely careful during October,
but I think a 1-week blackout is enough.
I very seriously doubt there's a satanic cult that collects black cats
at Halloween within 100 miles of here. The problem is the wanna-be
teenage thugs, and yes, the Halloween party people who want a black cat
as a party decoration. But I seriously doubt they are going to pay $70
to get a cat out of a shelter for that purpose. I think the strays and
roaming owned cats are at far greater risk.

We adopted Molly (not a black cat) on October 30th. The shelters and
adoption centers we visited made it very clear that the "no black cats" rule
was mostly for show. And to give the an excuse to get rid of anyone that
seemed overly interested in black cats only as well as otherwise a bit off.

They made it very clear we were welcome to take home any cat we wished after
talking to us for just a few minutes. A few offered to waive the fees as
well.

Still we hunted all day for this little girl and waited for nearly an hour
for a delayed rescue worker to show up with the carload she was in. When
they are right they are right.

By that time Charlie was getting worried that I was going to reject every
cat and kitten on the planet.

The rescue workers were a little surprised that I keyed in on her
immediately, even ignoring her very cute kittens who were available at the
same time.

There are people that would catnap a black cat off the street and use it in
some sort of Halloween ceramony,(sp, it looks wrong) ??
These are seriously sick people. I am glad I am not them because i would be
be ashamed of myself.

I'm sure there are some sickos out there who would do stuff that's about
as bad as you could imagine. But I think the more common concern is that
people giving Halloween parties might adopt a black cat to have on hand as
a prop. Such people probably wouldn't be very responsible, or understand
what is involved in taking on the commitment of animal adoption, so they
might dump the cat afterward. So even if they aren't deliberately out to
hurt an animal, through their ignorance/cluelessness/indifference they still
would cause it harm.

I don't know how much this really happens, though.

My sister once had a black cat escape out her apartment door on
Halloween, and never saw it again. We hoped that it had simply found
a new home, as opposed to having something drastic happen to it.

I once had a tabby escape and it wasn't holloween and it was never seen
again. Are you going to now say that tabbys are in danger of satanic
rituals year round?

Correlation is not causation.

This is just my opinion, and remember I live in a rural area....so, no,
I don't think there are people (here) who would catnap a cat
specifically for use in a Halloween ceremony. I think it's far more
likely that a black cat would be grabbed up and come to harm at the
hands of some gang of delinquents just looking for trouble, and there
are hordes of teenagers roaming the streets on Halloween. So definitely
Halloween is a bad night to be a cat outside. I have been in the
shelter biz for many years, and in all those years we had *one*
mutilated dog's body found. Turns out some kids found the dog dead on
the road and did the hacking post-mortem. Now THAT'S pretty sick. Some
kids put a cat in the library book drop once as a prank. But never any
real animal abuse nor really any missing pets. So I do think a lot of
it is hysteria/perpetuated myth. Doesn't hurt to scare people
though--seriously I'm glad the media does it, because it will make
people keep their cats inside at least that night. Neighborhood traffic
is heavy on Halloween too, and probably more cats get run over than
anything.
