Attic cat

When I got home from work yesterday, I called the cats that were
outside with the generic "kitty kitty, kitty". None showed up, but I
heard a meow I didn't recognize coming from the garage. I went in and
called again - the meow was fainter and hard to place.

The garage is not used for cars, it is used to store power garden
tools and some junk - it's hard to get around in. I climbed over
things to get to both ends and both sides and still the meow seemed to
be coming from different places. There was no cat to be found in the
garage.

Eventually, I decided the cat must be in the attic, but had no clue
how one could get up there since the access hole was covered.

I got a ladder and power screwdriver, and removed the access hole
cover. Too dark to see anything, except that the eves were not closed
in, so a cat could, if being chased hard enough by a dog, jump on
something outside and up through that gap. Went to get a big
flashlight.

After much searching, I caught a glimpse of the neighborhood red tabby
hiding from me in a corner. He obviously wasn't happy where he was,
otherwise why would he have responded to my calls? However, he did
not want *me* to rescue him. I left the step ladder in the hole in
the hope that he would use it after I left.

He was gone when I got home.

I suspect he was trying to get through the cat flap to get some food,
but the flap is blocked to keep Mooch (another feral) in until I can
tame him and get him to the vet. His struggles would have attracted
the dogs, and since he isn't all that familiar with where the dogs
stop because of the radio fence, he didn't just dodge around the
corner of the house like the resident cats do but instead ran for some
place he could climb.

They can sure get themselves into some strange spots - don't know if
it's fleeing from dogs or just curisoity, probably both. Hope the
tabby finds his/her way out without your having to climb in and rescue
her/him.

Definitely a tom. Not only is he red tabby, but he used to have a
home just down the road with an old lady, so he's known. He went
feral when she died 2-3 years ago. He has been getting some food
here, but access is current blocked, and the cat flap is well within
the containment area for my two large dogs ... by design: they exist
to control the possums and other vermin that were coming in to eat.
The dogs won't hurt cats, but they will chase them if they run away.

He hasn't been seen or heard from since - that's completely normal: I
normally see him only a few times a year (since he has to get past
dogs and face the resident cats (and the absence of prey), I suspect
that he comes here only when he can't find a meal somewhere else -
either that or he comes in after I go to bed).
