Strange eating habits

For years I have been using Melmac cereal bowls to feed the cats their
canned food. A few weeks ago I switched to small, flat dishes (also
Melmac) thinking that the sides of the bowl might "tickle" their
whiskers while eating. Tiger had the habit of taking a chunk of food
out of the bowl and putting it on the floor to eat it (this prompted my
switch to the flat plates). He still does this on occasion but not as
much. Amber now has the habit of spreading the food over the entire
surface of the plate while eating. Of course they swap plates once or
twice during the meal.

My cats eat out of the Royal Doolton with the hand painted Periwinkles.

I've heard they don't like deep bowls, sure saves on mess though.
