Default Strange eating habits

For years I have been using Melmac cereal bowls to feed the cats their
canned food. A few weeks ago I switched to small, flat dishes (also
Melmac) thinking that the sides of the bowl might "tickle" their
whiskers while eating. Tiger had the habit of taking a chunk of food
out of the bowl and putting it on the floor to eat it (this prompted my
switch to the flat plates). He still does this on occasion but not as
much. Amber now has the habit of spreading the food over the entire
surface of the plate while eating. Of course they swap plates once or
twice during the meal.

I feed on saucers for this very reason. But I still have to pick up balls of
cat food that they push off.

I've read that cats prefer shallow bowls. (I have no idea how that info. was
researched)
I buy any little "fruit bowl" that catches my fancy that's shallow at antique
shops, etc. My cats eat off of Desert Rose, Fantasia, Fenton, Blue Willow,
etc. I have at least a dozen. I have a hang-up about the cats eating out of a
clean bowl each meal, although I'm sure they don't care.

I use the paper plate type bowels from the super market. I bought a
nice stainless steel bowl that sets in a plastic holder or frame that
looked nice and would wash easily. The cat would have nothing to do with
it, so went back to the paper. Figured it wasn't worth it to try and
switch him over. Seems once they get used to something, thats it.

Oh, no way, there are people who don't wash their dishes? Nasty. My cats eat
out of our saucers, since we use mugs for coffee. But we eat so much
delivery and frozen during busy times that many days the four saucers I wash
for the cats are the only dishes I wash! [Note to self: must train cats to
eat pizza and chinese out of paper containers! :-) ]

My cats eat out of the Royal Doolton with the hand painted Periwinkles.

I've heard they don't like deep bowls, sure saves on mess though.
