Catfood - Sheba ??
Our two cats, Edgar and Agatha, have always been picky eaters. They like
fish stuff, especially with gravy and cheddar in it. When they first came, two years ago (they're brother and sister, about 4 now) we tried Fancy Feast and quickly discovered that if it was "classsic" (pate), they looked and sniffed and walked away. Would not eat the stuff. So we fed them FF fish, tuna, whitefish, etc. (grilled chunks with gravy). Our supermarket dispenses coupons, and it gave us a "buy two get one free" for Sheba cat food. On a whim, I bought 4 cans and when I came home I discovered that by mistake I had purchased "pate". Figured I'd try it on them cats and then probably throw it away because they do not like pate. But no, they gobbled it up (and the next 3 cans in the next 3 days). They love the stuff. I don't know much about Sheba, except that our supermarket does not have a great variety, and it's just a few pennies less than FF. OTOH, it has a huge variety of FF. Anyone have any comment on Sheba -- good, bad, indifferent? Thanks for any assistance, Jay (and Edgar and Agatha). |

Her preference is chicken, turkey, turkey & giblets, and she *loves* the beef. She also doesn't much care for the stuff in gravy. She laps up the gravy and leaves the "meat". Cheese? Nope! Perhaps ask the manager if they could stock different vareties? They offer lots of different types: http://www.sheba.com/Products Anyone have any comment on Sheba -- good, bad, indifferent? I bought Sheba for Persia. For a couple of weeks she loved it! Then she started turning her nose up at it. What can I say, she's a cat! I had to switch back to FF for her morning snack. BTW, don't let anyone here tell you Sheba contains sugar. It would seem the Sheba cat food sold in the UK is completely different from what is available in the US. Jill |

Thanks, Jay I've never found any indication Sheba brand contains sugar, anywhere. When I was buying it for Persia I compared the ingredients to FF, side by side, while standing in the store. Pretty much the same. But she did start to turn her nose up at the Sheba after a bit. I don't know why. Jill |

It's the same reason she doesn't like closed closet doors. They should be left open in case she wants to explore. Or find a nice dark place to snooze. If she encounters a closed closet she meows loudly. It doesn't matter if she chooses to go into it. They *must* be accessible! Jill |

My views on sugar in cat food is well known on the group, I won't let Boyfie have cat food with sugar in firstly because it's unnecessary and secondly because he won't let me clean his teeth. I hope his teeth will last his lifetime without extractions and up to now when he gets his yearly checkup, his teeth are excellent, he's now 11. Oh, he'd just love a can of Sheba and all the other very palatable "treaty foods" which invariably have sugar in but he isn't allowed.. Tweed |

I see no reason to believe it's any different from that produced for the home market. And it certainly does have sugar in, the can says so, otherwise I'd let Boyfie have it. The manufacturer replied to my e-mails promptly when I was concerned about Chinese ingredients (after the death of US cats through melamine) so I am very happy to mail them again to ask whether there is a difference between UK Sheba and US Sheba, sugar-wise. I suspect it will the same. Tweed |

So the American Sheba does not contain sugar?
I've never found any indication Sheba brand contains sugar, anywhere. I have a tray of the UK one right here - ingredients "meat and animal derivatives, fish and fish derivatives, minerals". It's expensive so ours only get it as a special treat. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- e m a i l : j a c k @ c a m p i n . m e . u k Jack Campin, 11 Third Street, Newtongrange, Midlothian EH22 4PU, Scotland mobile 07800 739 557 http://www.campin.me.uk Twitter: JackCampin |

I suspect it will the same. Tweed ~~~~~~ I don’t use Sheba, but I have noted the debate about US vs. UK versions of Sheba. Here are a couple of sites that may interest some of you. I notice that some varieties in the UK contain sugar, but some apparently do not. Perhaps that is also true in the US? I checked into it some time ago and saw that there was no reference to any kind of sugar, but I only looked at a couple of varieties since I do not use it. US Info (scroll down for list of ingredients): http://www.amazon.com/Sheba-Premium-...sheba+cat+food UK Info: http://www.diabeticcatcare.com/DCCCOK/UK.htm Tweed, I would be interested if you can ask the local producer about sugar, and I suspect there are others on this group who would also be interested. Incidentally, I agree with you about not using anything that has sugar in it for my twosome. I also do not use anything with grains. Cats are obligate carnivores and should not have grains. MaryL |
