Default Cat-to-cat body language

This morning a beautiful little Himalayan was sitting at the end of our
garden. I'll call her Miss Pretty. She's obviously well cared for, since
her huge fur coat was amazing.

Sonny was sitting in the window bird watching, disgusted by the recent
snowfall. When Miss Pretty moved, he spotted her, and went out through his
cat door. However, he didn't rush out, he moved in super slow motion.
When she saw him, she moved a few feet away and sat down again. Sonny,
again in slow motion, went to sniff where she had been sitting. Miss
Pretty watched. Sonny then crept along slowly until he was about 6 feet
from her and, ever so slowly, sat breadloaf style in the snow (yet he hates
the snow!), and pretended not to see her. She looked around, giving a
casual glance his way once in a while, for about 5 minutes. He did exactly
the same. Finally, Miss Pretty very slowly walked away and left our
garden. Sonny got up and sniffed where she had been sitting, and followed
her through the hedge. He came back, alone, 10 minutes later.

It's nice to see Sonny might have a friend, instead of toms who want to
fight him. It was fascinating to see each one convey the fact they weren't
hostile by moving incredibly slowly, sitting sideways, and not staring at
the other one, but merely glancing over. Cats definitely have their own
language.

She already KNEW she was pretty, so he had to avoid making her more
stuck-up. Maybe he succeeded. It sounds like a very nice encounter.

What a great description! That was almost as good as watching it myself.
I love watching cats interact, especially when they're being incredibly
casual (NOT!) with each other.

That's also the key for getting a cat used to a person. Some cat lovers
(but not true ailurophiles who know better) will see a cat and immediately
head for him/her, staring and marveling at the beauty of the creature, and
try to reach out to either pet or hold him/her. In cat language that's
incredibly rude if not down-right threatening behavior. It's been said
before here, and it's true - that's why cats tend to pick the non-cat person
(how the deity could have made such a perverse person, I don't know), to a
cat, a person who is ignoring him/her is the one being polite and friendly.

It sure was, we couldn't look away for a second. I've never seen such a
