Default Sick Cat Symptoms...Suggestions Please

Hello,
I hope this is the proper group for maybe some help or shedding some light
on my cats condition.
About a week and a half ago I noticed our female cat who is roughly 15-16
years old..looked alot thinner..she has not been eating, or eating very
little...I noticed she acts a little like she has a constant hairball in her
throat,by lick smacking and teisting her head (without the hacking) and also
her tongue sticking out placed inbetween her teeth...I figured that possibly
she had a sore tooth or gum so I got some soft food which she ate a little
once and a little the second time(which she threw up the second time). Next
day I noticed she has clear mucus coming from her nose and so to the vet we
go. I explain
her symptoms to the vet, and the vet says more than likely she has a cold or
respiratory infection...I tell the vet that I figured it was her somewhere
in her mouth..the vet procedes to say that to check her mouth she would have
to be put under which is dangerous for older cats and gives me an antibiotic
to give the cat (something like amoxicylin I think) and says if her appetite
doesnt come back when the medicine is gone to bring her back. Well now I
notice back home while giving the medicine to her, she has been have some
nose bleeding as well.. I hate to see my cat suffer, and I am curious if
anyone here would know what this might be or have had similar experiences.
Loss of appetite, sticking out tongue, occasional nose bleed.
Also, I am curious as to how well a cat of 15-16 years would averagely
respond to being put under for surgery if necessary.
I would rather have her put to sleep than to have her suffer much longer,or
to even have her suffer through and possibly after a surgery.

Hello,

Yes, this is a good place to come. There are lots of people here with
lots of experience with cats, and we all care.

I don't know what would cause the nose to bleed, but I'd call the vet
and report that. If the vet doesn't show any interest in checking
further, I think I'd call another vet. In fact, I think I'd call
another vet anyway. It seems to me that the vet should have at least
tried to look at her mouth.

She is fairly old for a cat, although some do live as long as 20 years.
Still, by the time they reach her age, there are lots of problems they
can have. I fully understand your feelings. Naturally you don't want
her to suffer.

Good luck, and keep in touch. We'll be offering purrs for your baby to
be okay.

I agree with you totally Joy. I would *definitely* talk to a different vet.

The bleeding didn't start until after the medicine had been used twice. The
clear drainage(mucus I guess) is gone as it went away the evening I took her
to the vet. I wonder if the medicine has had something to do with
this.(dried up the membranes) It doesnt bleed all the time just saw it
happen twice when/after I was holding her down to give her the medicine.
The first time part drool/mucus, part blood. The second time more blood
trickle after I had wiped her face with a damp warm rag. The bleeding didn't
last long. The medicine will be out tomorrow and if she doesnt eat by then I
am definately going to set up another vet visit and take it from there
before she gets real weak.
Hard to handle these types of ordeals when you have raised them from
kittens.
Her brother definately knows something is wrong with her.
Thanks for the input and kind words.

The nose bleeding thing has me baffled, but the weight loss and lip smacking
can be symptoms of kidney disease... sounds like she's dehydrated and
nauseous. I would get her to another vet for sure... she needs help and I
don't think the answer here is to put her down.

I have to second the advice to see another vet. Putting them under at
that age may, indeed, be a bit risky, but sometimes the risk is worth
taking. My Frank, who will be 17 next Saturday, was anesthetized three
times inside three weeks this autumn because of tooth problems. There
just wasn't another way to deal with his problem (though one of the
times turned out unnecessary, but he survived in spite of elevated
kidney values).

We will be purring for your cat to be OK.
