I guess your central heating may be different from here in the UK-
here the standard arrangement is a boiler that heats water then pumps
it through to on the wall radiators

My Grandfather's home had that system. We lived with him and remained
in that house after he passed. I hated cleaning those radiators/

we have a gas furnace in this condo and it sends heated air through the
heat registers (vents). I have lived here for 48 years MLB

[Heat] register is a term that seems to have fallen into disuse
here in the UK. I recall my grandparents talking about opening
the register on the Parkray coal fire - the register was simply a
sliding vent that could vary the amount of air being drawn into
the base of the fire (and hence regulate the intensity and output
of the fire).
