already in a deep dark financial hole. The oncologist is going to have
to put me on the second best med (probably Coumadin) and hope for the

A quick glance at the site indicates that household income strongly
determines if aid is available or not. Some of your other prescriptions
might also meet criteria for financial aid. I may have been told wrong
but I understood that when you became eligible for SS Disability you
were also eligible for Medicare benefits.

Wishing you the best

Thanks, and thanks for the correct spelling of the drug. I still don't
think we'll qualify, but I'm at least going to try. Thanks again!

Too true, I talked about it with my in-home occupational therapist and
she said she'd put in a request to their office (it's the same agency
the nurses work out of) to have a social worker come out to my house and
help us with things like that. She recommended "Meals on Wheels", but I
don't think those are free. But wasn't there some food organization you
used to suggest where you could get great deals on buying food?

Angel Food Ministries. They went belly-up. It was supposed to be a
non-profit charity, and for a number of years it was. But then the founders
got greedy. Suddenly it wasn't about helping people feed a family anymore,
it was about how much money can I make running this organization? They were
paying themselves 6-figure salaries. They shut down before they could *be*
shut down. It's a shame, because they really did help some people with less
expensive groceries for a while.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. My mother was helped by them when she lived
in Florida. It was a really good deal. I hate it when a good charity
organization becomes corrupt, or just overly bureaucratic and useless.

This is why I distrust most charities. Greed overtook the good intentions.
IIRC most of the food was donated so I don't know why they were paying
themselves ridiculous salaries and misappropriating funds. There is a new
organization called OneHarvest (the people who started it used to work for
Angel Food and want to fill the gap). It doesn't appear to be available
nationwide yet.

It killed me when Red Cross took donated insulin (INSULIN!!!) and SOLD
it to Katrina survivors! Just don't get me started on them!

They can do that?! Over here they's get reported to the Charities
Commission who could withdraw their charitable status and all the tax
breaks that go with it (The best of which is Gift Aid- where a charity
can claim back the tax of a donation from a UK basic rate taxpayer-
puts about £2.30 on every ten pounds donated)

They got BILLIONS (with a B) in donations. Each Katrina survivor got
exactly $300. What are you going to do with $300 when you entire world
has been wiped from the face of the earth? Oh and they also served hot
meals for a few weeks - BAH!

Interesting, I had no idea they went belly-up. I was introduced to
them by a religious lady I know. I checked what they offered, but it
didn't appear to be a better deal than what can be found in the local
supermarkets when on sale, so I never shopped from them. What's more,
the combinations of what was inside the boxes did not match what I eat,
so I would have had to get rid of most of the stuff anyway.
Maybe in more expensive parts of the country they would have made
some sense, but not here (MD, Baltimore). Heck, even Aldi's regular
prices were lower than Angel Food's. Maybe if one qualified with like
food stamps or something like that it would be cheaper? I wouldn't know.

My father despised the Red Cross decades before Hurricane Katrina. They
were supposed to notify him of my birth (he was in Okinawa). They didn't.
He found out I'd been born when a military buddy got a letter from his wife
and she happened to mention me. Dad never forgave them for that.

My father (a WW1 vet) had little good to say about the Red Cross. The
Salvation Army and the YMCA provided free coffee to servicemen - the Red
Cross charged for it! (And back during WW2, when schoolchildren were
knitting squares to make afghans for the Red Cross, I heard they were
selling the afghans for which we'd contribut3ed the yarn and the labor.)
