OT Vegemite *Not* Banned in US

... "Yowie" wrote in message ... I reckon I could manage without vegemite if I had to, although Marmite & Promite are poor alternatives, they'd do in a pinch I guess. But life wouldn't be worth living without timtams. There is nothing in this world (that I know of) that even comes close to the Timtam. MMMM.... Timtams. Yowie Fear not. Both Vegemite & Timtams are available in the UK. Vegemite is superior to Marmite, but Timtams aren't as good as Penguins ;-) http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.c...s.php3?item=47 I'ts hard to believe anything could be better than Timtams, but I'd be happy to do a taste test of Timtams and Penguins, if someone would send me a sample of each. ;-) Joy |

I mean, somebody must be happy about it, right? G Yeeesh. No way. haha!!! And, I'm a vegeterian. -feverish Vegemite actually doesn't contain any animal products. You're probably thinking of Brovil which is made from beef and looks the same. Vegemite is made from yeast and malt extracts. It's actually a good source of vitamin B12 plus other B vitamins. I'm vegetarian and I also eat vegemite. It's really is good stuff. Honest! It tastes terrible if you slather it on thick, because it's far too salty. However you're not supposed to eat it that way. Only a tiny amount is required and it should be eaten with margerine or butter on the bread as well. A jar of vegemite goes a long way. In the vegemite ads you see these people eating toast with the vegemite spread on waaay too thick. Only need a quarter of what they show is needed. Dewi - Vegemite defender ;D I didn't think it had animal products in it. My reply was unclear, sorry. When and if I ever run across some again, I'll try it as you suggest, spread thin and on toast. Maybe I just didn't give it a fair chance last time. It's not too popular in California. I've never seen it here, nor have I ever seen a commercial for it. /shrug Who knows? Maybe we'll start a new trend. lOl!! -feverish |

Actually, one time a Canadian *and* an Australian friend (that's two people, total, not one person with dual citizenship ) were visiting me at the same time. The Aussie brought Timtams, of course. The Canadian, from Toronto, brought these wonderful maple cookies. And I had to say that, despite my long anticipation for that moment when I would finally get to try Timtams, the maple cookies won out, big-time. I didn't dislike the Timtams, but, well - at the risk of starting some sort of international incident - I have to say that they didn't live up to the legend. Sorry! The Australians on this ng can hate Oreos in return - I won't be offended. Joyce |

That is *such* a relief. Thank you very much for setting the record straight! Oddly, not all Australians are addicted to vegemite. My sister, who has lived in London (UK) for several years, specifically asked us *not* to send her vegemite or tim tams as she doesn't like either of them. My mother, an immigrant to Australia herself, was mildly shocked that my sister could do without the two Australian staple foods. Mind you, each time my sister visits Australia she goes insane shopping for stuff, so there are a *few* things she misses from the Land of Oz (or it could just be the favourable exchange-rate). Tish My ex was technically a naturalized Australian-- born in England, moved to Oz as a child. His mother never took Australian citizenship, but she was the one who constantly sent him Oz-flag pillow cases, and socks with little maps of Australia on them. My memory of London is largely filled with memories of me grazing though lollies (i.e. sweets) like jelly babies, penguin bars and some sort of really hard candy that my dad had to bash on a fence so as to break it up into smaller pieces. You can tell what my priorities were at the time, sweets, sweets and more sweets. I recently asked a friend of mine, who is English, if Penguin bars still existed and if they tasted like Tim Tams. She assured they were still about, they weren't as nice as Tim Tams (in her opinion) but insisted that chocolate in the UK is heaps better than the chocolate in Australia. Dewi. |

I sneaked a bag of Trebor mints that I can't get here, past customs, last time I went. :P I recently asked a friend of mine, who is English, if Penguin bars still existed and if they tasted like Tim Tams. The average commercial chocolate bar you pick up in a corner store in the UK is much better than its American counterpart. I remember getting a Cadbury bar out of a machine in a Tube station, and it was just wonderful. Anything like that here would be inedible. I spoke to my friend in NewZealand last night and he assured me that he's got ready supply of both Vegemite and something he says he prefers, Marmite. He's going to send me a jar of both when I get settled in my new place. So.. my Vegemite/Marmite experience will continue soon. -feverish |

"Kreisleriana" wrote in message ... From Slate.com: http://www.slate.com/id/2152218/?nav=fix OK, now that you USians know it's not banned, will you rush out to buy some to see what the fuss is about? g If you do, take a tip from a Marmite eater. Spread it *very* thinly on your buttered toast or it will feel like it's burning your mouth. Tweed |
