Cat-sitting Again
I've been cat-sitting for my neighbor since August 1st. She'll be gone
until the 16th. This time she made sure she had enough Fancy Feast (the two boys split a can twice a day). However, they're also both of different prescription diets of dry kibble. I was given very specific instructions about how much kibble should be in the bowls, practically measured in inches. So, she has enough R/x kibble for one cat but I know there is not enough of the dry to last that long for the other. Arrrgh! What do I have to do, knock her on the head?! She ran out of cat food the last time! Trust me, I know the prescription food is expensive. (I've been feeding Persia prescription food since her initial bladder issues in 2004... and now, kidney problems.) But if she can afford to go jaunting off on vacations, surely she can make sure she has enough cat food? Am I wrong? Sorry, I'm just venting again. It just ticks me off. Jill |

Jill She probably doesn't think about it, because she can just run to the store/vet and get more of it. Pretty annoying though, from your perspective. Wonder if her vet would allow you to pick some up and charge her account? I know mine would, but we have a pretty lengthy relationship, and he knows who watches my kids. |

I'll have to call to find out. Of course it's Saturday, so they closed at 2 o'clock and they aren't open on Sunday. There's enough of the food to last through the next week if I dish it out judiciously. I just think it's inconsiderate of her to not have enough food on hand. She asked me to cat sit nearly a month ago. She should have planned better. Jill |

If it were ordinary cat food, you could just go to a grocery store and have her pay you back when she gets home. A cat on prescription food needs extra care! -- Joyce Fluffy Mackerel Pudding - "Once upon a time, the world was young and the words 'mackerel' and 'pudding' existed far, far away from one another. One day, that all changed. And then, whoever was responsible somehow thought the word 'fluffy' would help." -- Hilarious recipes at: www.candyboots.com |

I'm not sure I could pick up prescription food for her cats. (I actually buy Persia's R/x food from a different vet. They wouldn't sell it to me until her regular vet faxed over a prescription. This vet charges less - for the food - and it's not as far to drive.) I think I can stretch this to make it last. But if I have to, I'll see if she'll call the vet and "authorize" me picking up a bag of the R/x food. Jill |

Joy ***************** I didn't buy any. The last time she went out of town she split the cat-sitting duties between me and another friend of hers. Me the first week, the other friend the next. I called and left a message she was running out of the R/x kibble. But then the other person took over the cat care. I don't know if that person bought any R/x food or not. I'm not sure just anyone can walk into the vet's office and say they're buying a bag of prescription food for someone else's cat. An aside: You really do have to have a prescription for this food. With the exception of this past week, I generally buy Persia's R/x food from a practice that has never treated Persia. It's not as far a drive, saves on gas money. But they wouldn't sell the food to me until Persia's vet faxed over a prescription. Jill |

I just know that when I'm "going away", I always think I've got everything covered, even using a check list, and there is always something (unfortunately it isn't always the same thing) that I have forgotten. I don't have an "account" per se, but I do have an understanding with my vet, that if there is an emergency (or the babies need *something*) that my 'sitter' can get it or bring them in, and I'll pay for it when I get back. Only because I worry more about them than I do about me, I've always worked this out with my varying vets (it's a deciding factor when I change vets). |

I have always paid cash (actually, by check), so I don't have an "account" set up for paying bills. However, I once asked my vet if I would be able to make arrangements at the reception desk so my pet sitter could bring Holly or Duffy in for treatment, if needed. He said, "Yes." Then he smiled and said, "Of course, we would take care of them anyway--without any special arrangements." MaryL |

Then he smiled and said, "Of course, we would take care of them anyway--without any special arrangements." My vet allows the same arrangement. I wrote up a letter for them to put in my cat's files along with the name of my pet sitter stating that whatever care they feel is necessary if I'm unable to be contacted when my cats are in the care of the sitter that they are authorized to do so and I'd pay when I get back. It even includes euthenasia if my vet feels that is the only hope. That one was a tough one to authorize but I wouldn't want a very sick and/or in pain cat waiting for my authorization. I'd sure hate it if it comes to that but I trust the judgement of my sitter and vet and they know I don't put dollar limits on treating them. |
