I'm having trouble playing some video files on Real Player and Windows
Media. I have the most updated ones. RP plugin just won't load and WMP says
compressed with a codec that is not supported, but it is supposed to be able
to. Mac OS X which I know you have too. Any ideas for help?

Thx.

I suggest something called VLC its open source and multiplatform, written
by French school kids. Its about all I use.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

If you knew the codec you could try downloading it.

thanks John. That will be handy for some things. Unfortunately the site I am
trying to see clips on has a "launch cast" to get through first, and I can't
find a way to extract the actual video files to play. Very frustrating. But
that player will be very handy when I am able to download files. Media
players drive me nuts.

I presume you have the latest versions of both Real Player, and WMP? If
not I would update them. Also you can try checking for updates in RP
maybe they posted a fix. Can you provide a link to a page with the
problem if their is one?

I have that problem with a lot of sites also. Generally with me it is
the plug in. I seem to have a lot of problems with that since going Mac.
I was hoping that latest Java update this week would have helped but it
doesn't seem to.

It does seem to be plug in specific with RP, but it is definitely a
compression codec problem with WMP as I've had it do that with downloaded
wma files before too.

I have the latest versions. Apparently, the newest WMP for mac has a lot of
codec problems and we have to wait for the upgrade (by which time I'm sure
they will be using newer ones.) DOn't know why real player won't load. I'm
just trying to see the clips (not the trailers) on this site:

http://www.empiremovies.com/movies/2...abiscuit.shtml

Some play with WMP, most don't. None seem to load with Real Player.

This isn't the first time I've run into this, but it is the most recent.

Karen

WMP for the Mac never really worked right for me either. I suspect
Microsoft for obvious reasons never wanted it to. They never put in any
method to update it. When you go to the update site to try all that
happens is it gives you the page for the windows version. They had to
produce a Mac version if they wanted to claim it as an industry standard
but it doesn't work any more.

Yeah, I imagine they are very proud of themselves.

I played one of the clips with real player with no problems. The latest
version of real player for the mac is real one player version 9.0. If
this is the version that you have then it must be a codec issue, or
maybe something else mac related. Sorry I can't help more.

That's the version I have. I guess I'll dump and reload and see what
happens.
