Default Urgent purrs needed please - He's home!

The purrs seem to be working, so keep them coming please.

This morning when I went to visit Kotyo he looked much perkier than
yesterday. He headbutted my hand, and was rubbing against the bars of
the cage. The vet on duty said that he seemed to be breathing fine, and
he was even restless enough to try to pull out his IV overnight. She
said she wanted to take another x-ray to check if there was any air
inside his thorax, and if there wasn't, that means that the hole has
closed enough that it is no longer a danger to his lungs, and we could
take him home. He was still not eating and she hoped that being home
would get him to eat.

So, we came back his afternoon and they had him already all packed up
and ready to go home!!! When we got home with him he started walking
around the apartment with his tail held high, reclaiming his kingdom. He
went to his cat tree and started sharpening his claws, which I thought
was a really good sign. But then he started panting and wheezing :-( It
seems that even this little bit of exertion affected his breathing. I
was *this* close to rushing him back to the hospital, but he stopped
panting after a few seconds. So instead, I have been watching him like a
hawk for the past 6-7 hours, literally counting his breaths...

He ate a tiny little bit of food (about a teaspoonfull) twice this
evening, but then he refused to eat anymore, and he hasn't eaten
anything else in the last 4 hours. He acts like he's nauseous. I tried
again to give him a bit of his chicken wet food, and he actually licked
it, and then kind of burped - as if just the taste of the food was
making him want to throw up. But of course he has practically nothing to
throw up... I will be asking the vet for anti-nausea meds tomorrow, when
we bring Kotyo for a checkup. I'll also get a can of Hill's A/D and a
syringe, just in case. I might have to syringe water into him, and
probably food, too, unless the anti-nausea meds make a difference...

Still, he is home and sleeping peacefully on his favorite folding chair.
I am so happy to have him back home where he belongs!

It's possible he doesn't have an upset stomach. Maybe he's afraid to
eat because the last time he ate something, he nearly choked on it. It's
also possible that his trachea is irritated and sore, and that just puts
him off swallowing. (Different "pipes", I realize, but they're pretty
close together.) Just a thought.

Continuing purrs for him to recover fully. It's great that he's home!

You could be right. He ate some more this morning, twice. He didn't seem
nauseous this time. We'll see how many more times I can get him to eat
something before his vet appointment this afternoon. My mom is making
him some turkey broth (just water and turkey, nothing else added) in the
hopes that he'll drink it, because he isn't drinking any water right
now. He has never been a big water drinker, and usually gets his water
from his wet food which always gets water added to it.

Default Urgent purrs needed please - Not so good news today

We went to see the vet this afternoon, and he was alarmed at how much
air was accumulated under Kotyo's skin. He said that this indicated that
the hole was not closed. So even though he was not getting air into his
thorax because he has a tube in there to let the air escape, he has
actually not improved at all.

The vet sent us for an endoscopy, so that they can find out exactly
where the tear is and what can be done to fix it. So off we went to a
different clinic, and they did the endoscopy. The findings are not good.
He has a 1 cm vertical tear in his trachea, in a very bad place - not
high on the neck or inside the thoracic cavity, but right on the edge of
the thoracic cavity. The specialist said that it is a bad location -
very difficult to reach. He also said that all the air collected under
his skin was putting pressure on the torn edges of the trachea, and they
were blowing back inside the trachea itself, obstructing the airway. He
showed me the video from the camera they put down Kotyo's trachea. There
was something like a balloon at the location of the tear, which was
almost completely plugging the airway. He said that Kotyo must be a very
strong cat to have managed to live like this for 3 days.

They don't want to operate for now, because of the difficult location of
the tear. So they put in tubes to drain the air from under his skin -
one on each side of his chest. They also opened up a wound in his chest,
right across from where the tear is, so that air can escape from there
too. Basically they want to reduce the air pressure on the torn edges,
hoping that they will seal and start healing. We are supposed to massage
the back of his neck and his front legs every 15-30 minutes, in order to
push the newly entered air towards the tubes where it can escape.

We will wait until Monday or Tuesday to see if this will help and allow
the trachea to seal itself shut again. If it doesn't work, though, they
would have to operate, even though the chances are not good :-(

My poor little monster looks awful with all these tubes and stuff in him
:-( Sweety took one look at him when he got home, then she hissed and
ran away. And he is still not eating, but the surgeon said not to force
him because we should not stress him out. I am hoping that once the
anesthesia wears off a bit, he might get hungry, now that he doesn't
have a big cushion of air pressing on his throat...

If you still have any spare purrs, we would all appreciate them.

I'm cringing at reading your account, and obviously am hoping for the best in
what seems to be an increasingly-desperate situation.
