I know all the pro's and con's about moderated lists but the spam in here is
getting ridiculous as I say it doesn't bother me apart from making it hard
to find threads I want to read but I can imagine it would put off any
potential new readers- so is there a time and a place for a mod on here?

I prefer not to use moderated groups. After all, I might not agree with the
moderator concerning "unacceptable" behavior.

I am still using Windows Live Mail even though I do realize that it is an
inferior news reader. Even so, I do not see nearly as much spam as some of
you have described. I think Jill may be correct that the problem is with
Google. I have put a few of the more prolific spammers into my kill file,
but I usually don't even bother with that--I just skim over any messages
posted from names/threads that I recognize as being questionable.

Some years ago I was kicked off a moderated forum (not about cats)
because I didn't agree with something the moderator deemed unacceptable.
Hence, she kicked me out. IMHO, some moderators tend to turn into
petty dictators. They perceive the group to be their own little
kingdom. Disagree with them, you get booted.

As I said, I don't see the spam people complain about, either. Or the
trolls.

I think Jill may be correct that the

Google doesn't care about Usenet or "groups" in general.

Sure, it's nice they offer a way for people to get here. I've used GG
to post occasionally when I was travelling and was using a computer in a
hotel business center. It was the only way to get my rpca fix! I've
also used it to look up old posts. (One thing they do fairly well is
archive.)

People can complain to Google all they like. They won't do anything
about it. My 2 cents.

I don't have a choice, seeing as I read these groups only at work. If I loaded any kind of software on this computer to read with, I'd get fired.

It isn't Windows Live Mail that gets rid of the spam for you,
it's your news server, news.individual.net in Berlin. They're
good at that.

You are probably correct. I keep intending to get rid of WLM but keep
NIN--still haven't gotten around to it.
