Default cats and coyotes

Cats have the common sense not to become coyote food:

Interesting conclusion you can draw from that first article:
the US is not as different from the UK as regards cats going
outside as a lot of posters here would have us believe. (The
second article is about feral cats, the first about pet cats).

Coyotes aren't my concern. I may have mentioned a coyote in SC last
year but they aren't what concern me. I've actually had an alligator
show up in my back yard. Granted, it wasn't a huge alligator but any
alligator is one too many.

We've also got eagles and large hawks. Raptors which, if your cat is
small enough, one could easily injure if it saw the cat as prey. That's
a long shot but hey, they pick rabbits off the ground so...

Rabies. Raccoons aren't usually rabid but there was an instance of one
found on Dataw earlier this year. Even if they aren't rabid, raccoons
aren't friendly creatures. They bite and have claws. And they're at
least as big as most cats.

I'd rather just keep Buffy indoors. She seems to be quite happy.
