Default Mommy Took Away Their Toy!!

Yesterday I walked downstairs to get some medicine when I noticed Jessie,
Sammy, Ozzy, and Archer gathered around and staring intently at a cat bed
laying on the floor of my bedroom. I walked over to see what they were so
interested in and saw, crouched as far under the edge of the cat bed as he
could get, a lizard - sans tail (I don't even want to think about where that
tail went)!

OK, I'm a softie and I can't stand to watch my cats torment another living
creature. I grabbed up Ozzy in one arm, Archer in another arm, and was
trying to field Sammy and Jessie with one foot (I'm not that great a soccer
player, so this was a pretty useless endeavor). This left remarkably few
limbs free with which to grab the lizard for rescue (not even counting the
fact that I was a bit squeamish about picking up a tail-less lizard with my
bare hands). Ozzy and Archer were squirming frantically in my arms, and it
was almost impossible to hold them - especially while hopping around on one
foot while trying to push Sammy and Jessie off the lizard with the other. I
tried putting them down on my bed, but it only took about 2 micro-seconds
for them to get back down and back to the lizard.

Finally, I picked up the cat bed and threw it over the lizard in hopes of
thwarting my crew for the few minutes it would take me to unlock my bedroom
door and get a piece of toilet paper with which to pick up said lizard.
With toilet paper in hand, I tried to body block the cats while I picked up
the cat bed to grab the lizard. The lizard was lying on the floor belly up
and unmoving. Oh well, I thought, too late - but I did give it a good try.
I didn't want anyone eating the lizard and then puking it up on my carpet,
so I picked up the lizard anyway and placed him on my deck outside my
bedroom. He was still laying belly up, unmoving. I turned around to get my
keys to lock the door again, and when I turned back around the lizard was
nowhere to be seen. *Very* good acting job on his part. And I'm glad he
made a successful get-away. He'll probably grow his tail back in no time
and, hopefully, stay out of my house in the future.

You are a very cruel and mean Meowmie!!!!! As punishment, I predict
that you will find the tail, properly digested and horked up, on your
pillow when you to bed tonight LOL

(I probably would have done the same thing, but not is such a comical
way Mainly as I am not that squeamish, and would have just grabbed
said lizard and removed it from the house/proximity of cats... )

Oh, yes. Leila knows all about cruel two-legs who steal toys like that.
This house is not sealed as hermetically as I would like for two
reasons: it gets *hot* in the summer in Florida, and heat leaking in
runs the electric bill up higher than I like to think about due to the
impossibility of living without air conditioning; and the place does,
occasionally, leak a lizard or two. Those are usually the little Cuban
anoles - small enough that I think they're still females (anoles are
born female and change sex if and as they grow).

It was so bad for a while that I went out to buy a butterfly net - not
to emulate Nabokov, but to snag lizards. The trick is either to a)
catch them before Leila notices them (hah!) or, at least, b) catch them
before she has done too much damage to them.

Fortunately, the skinks seem to prefer the heat of the garage and don't
come into the house....

Nope, they still haven't forgiven me - Sammy chomped down on my arm when I
picked her up to cuddle yesterday. Jeez, cats can hold grudges for a *long*

I've acted out that scene with many a mousie, but never a lizard. The cats
always go back to where they first saw the mouse, like another will pop
right out of there.
