Human note: Often, when I go get the mail, Lorelei looks out the front
door into the front porch.

But, the door to the porch is in the living room, and only this week did
Lorelei come into the living room as far as my computer chair.

Today is was fairly warm out, almost 60 degrees, and not windy. The
warmest day so far this year!

I couldn't coax Lorelei to come through the open door, which is only a
little ways past my computer chair, so when she came for scritches, and
was in my lap, and purring and relaxed, I carried her out onto the front
porch, it's just about two steps from my computer chair.

Kenzie absolutely adored my front porch, spending as much time out there
as possible, weather permitting.

There is a big, very, very old easy chair out there, and a small table;
Kenzie used to sleep under the table, where it isn't so bright. There
are windows with both glass and screens on three sides.

I stayed out on the porch with Lorelei, where she explored, slowly, with
her eyes looking just HUGE.

Most of the time her tail was held up, and not moving much, so I know
she wasn't too scared.

She sniffed around the opening at the bottom of the outside door for
several minutes.

Finally she found that she could go under the easy chair, where I put a
piece of cloth to cover it, and the cloth hangs to the floor.

The chair is VERY old, and ugly. It was left on the porch when I bought
the house in 1979, and looks like the big old chairs in my Grandmother's
house, with a big floral pattern, which I immediately had to cover.

But, it's fairly comfortable to sit in and read the paper

Once Lorelei was 'hiding' under the chair, I figured she had had enough
for one day, to I opened the door to the house, and Lorelei went back
inside.

Her pretty blue eyes REALLY stand out in the daylight, and I noticed
that her fur looks more tan than gray, in the natural light on the
porch.

Indoors, under artificial light, her fur looks more gray in the back
half, and just somewhat tan in the front,

She's not a brown tabby, but she really not gray, as I thought. I think
'tan tabby' is probably the most accurate.

It's funny that I thought she was gray all this time, but I got her in
November, and she stayed in the basement for a week.

And, at least to me, she looks like a gray tabby in her pictures, too.

There's isn't much natural light in my house: it was built in 1917, and
there aren't very many windows, and they are kind of small.

I live in the city, and there is another house on one side only five or
six feet away, and it's much taller than my house, two stories, so much
less light comes in that side, as well.

I hope that Lorelei comes to like my front porch, like Kenzie did.

I like to sit out there and read the newspaper, or my books, because the
light is so much better, and I can leave two of the windows open for
fresh air. The windows, like everything else, are old, but they have
screens, so there's no mosquitos, and more importantly: Lorelei can't
escape.

All around the porch, at the bottom of the windows is a small ledge
where Kenzie loved to sit and look out the windows.

If there was something that interested her, she would go from window to
window, or just sit on the little ledge.

I'm afraid that Lorelei may be a little to big to comfortably sit on the
ledge.

If so, I will build some platforms for her, right at the level of the
little ledge.

One of my neighbors was having some work done on his house this week and
I scavenged a nice piece of heavy particle board, and a long piece of 2"
by 2" wood to use as bracing for the platforms...Lorelei being a fairly
fluffy cat, after all

I love getting building materials for my projects for free; I am hoping
that I won't have to go out and buy anything, to build two nice
platforms for Lorelei.

I think short visits to the front porch are in order for Lorelei, for
awhile. Perhaps I give her her gooshy food out there, so she will come
to associate the front porch with good things

I hope we have a nice sunny warm day soon.

I have yet to meet a cat that doesn't like to lay in the warm sunshine.

Unfortunately, where her cat tree is located gets very little sun,
because the front porch blocks most of the sun from that window.

Of course, when it gets HOT, maybe that's not so bad: Lorelei will
likely never be forced off of her cat tree, because the sun is too hot.

(sniff) I can still see Kenzie lying in a tiny patch of sunlight on the
front porch, on one of the last few 'good days' she had, before she went
to the Bridge.

I sure wish I had thought to take a picture of her in the little patch
of sunshine. (sniff)
