Don't worry about it. The other day while I was just waking up one of the
cats coughed up a hairball.

Hodge just peed on the carpet while I was just a few feet away. Sigh.
It's been three months since the last incident. He's healthy. Grrr.

Has he been by himself more than usual, or has anything been different
today that might bother him?

No, not at all. And he seems to be quite happy doing it, too (this time,
I witnessed the act).

And you're *sure* it can't be a UTI? The only time Herrie peed on some
laundry - a few feet from where I was standing, in plain sight of me, it
turned out that he needed an antibiotic to clear up a UTI. (Over the course
eof several days I'd found that one of the 3 cats was very occasionally
peeing in inappropriate places, but had no clue as to which one, until
Herrie was so blatant about it that day.) He didn't act stressed about it,
& no crying out in pain or anything, just squatted & peed on the pile of
laundry.

Enzyme cleaners - ARGH! I have yet to find one that really worked.

Feeling your pain here.

I'm with you. I'd take a hairball over kitty pee any day. No comparison.

Peeing on the carpet is an abnormal behaviour that indicates something
is not quite right psychologically or physically (although Hodge has
been certified healthy; I think the enzyme cleaner may have worn off and
he picked up a whiff) and is also damaging to the carpet and floor.

Hairballs are normal and are easily cleaned.

What do these two things have to do with one another??? Of course I have
to worry if he's going to keep peeing outside the box.

It's a nightmare cleaning cat pee out of a carpet. That's why I have
cheapo carpet squares , you can hose them down outside or throw them
away .Of course they look crap and cheap and nasty . LOL

I read in Peter Nevilles book that you can wash the area in
biological washing powder and the spray with diluted surgical spirit,
as this dissolves the fatty deposits in the urine . Sometimes those
pet store cleaners have a scent that makes the cat want to mark over
it .

I know that inappropriate elimination may be a sign of a medical
problem, etc. but with my cats (all except one who just LOVED peeing
on fabric) it has literally always been a sign that they have a
message for me. Ihave never had a cat with a UTI, (you bet I took them
to the vet every time, too) but I have had a lonely cat take a noisy
poo in the middle of the living room while I was IN THERE and on the
telephone with my mother. (This was the infamous Gnarly Jean.) You can
imagine what I said to my mother. She chuckled and said, "well, she
certainly knows how to get your attention." At the time I worked full
time and went to school full time. Another time Boo got mad because my
husband kept shooing her off the bed because the down comforter was
there without its cover, as I was washing the cover. After the bed was
all made up nice a fresh she waited until he got in and peed right on
the bed with him in it. Took her to the vet, which was very
traumatizing for her, she howls all the way like you're sawing off her
foot or something. Nothing was wrong, but I suspect the trip to the
vet functioned like aversive therapy for her, as she has not done it
again. Or, maybe we have not ****ed her off since then! Anyway, I hope
you figure it out. It is one of the biggest frustrations with these
wonderful creatures.
