hours trying to scratch his way into the fridge. Here he is reaching
for the handle:

He should know by now that Meowmie is a soppy vegetarian and the
fridge never contains anything but vegetables. He's been with me for
16 years, for pity's sake! He seems absolutely convinced that heaven
lurks behind the fridge door. Do your cats ever get this kind of
monomania?

When my family first moved back to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1976, my
father initially refused to have an air conditioner, as he tended to
find most air conditioning too cold (he later changed his view when
his book collection started mildewing). One hot, sticky summer day,
I opened the refrigerator and our kitten hopped inside and curled up
on top of the whole watermelon at the bottom of the fridge. She
thought that she had found the perfect solution to the heat, and was
disappointed when I promptly scooped her back out again. She made
several more unsuccessful attempts to move into the refrigerator over
the next several days.

Well, if YOU eat it, it must be tastier than what you give her. Cat
logic!

Besides, there are all sorts of goodies in there like cantaloupe & whipped
cream & sherbet & cheese & ice cream...

Niobe is always on patrol in front of the fridge in "the food room".
Whenever you go near there, she takes up her post. She just gives me her
pathetic starving look, but she starts meowing loudly when DH goes in. She
loves milk, and being the trained slave that I am, I always make sure there
is some lactaid (lactose free milk) for her.
