Default false alarm

When I went to scoop Rusty's litter box tonight, I found, to my
surprise, he was not sleeping in his carrier as I thought. I looked
around and couldn't find him. After I came back from disposing his
dirty litter, I looked all over for him. He was not on his cat
hammock, not under the coffee table, and not locked in my bedroom. No
answer to my calling his name. Not that he used to answer my call.
I was getting frantic. I knew he didn't go out as I haven't opened the
door prior to my litter box duty. My imagination was going wild. Maybe
he was sick and hiding somewhere. Maybe he went to RB.
Then when I went to turn on the AC, I saw him sitting nonchalantly by
the kitchen entrance. I was so relief but I told him he was a bad boy.

I know the feeling. I spent some time getting more and more concerned one
evening when I couldn't find Holly. She is my little "velcro kitty"--she
sticks close to me, wherever I am, but on that occasion I looked
*everywhere* and couldn't find her. I called and called as I looked in her
favorite places, then under furniture, then in closets, etc. Finally, I
turned around--and there she was. She was walking about two paces behind me
and probably wondered why in the world I kept calling when she was with me
all the time!

Betsy (RB) was soooo good at that sort of thing. At one period in my
life, I had a job some 4-5 hours from home by road, so I rented a small
house in the new location as I had every hope and desire of keeping the
old one and moving back there full time. When I say "small" - it had
about three rooms and a bathroom, and, under the circumstances, was
barely furnished. There was really NO living room furniture; I think I
had a mattress on the floor and a small table and a few chairs at this
stage. The house was actually almost ideal for a single person (although
located so far from where I really wanted to live), and I could examine
the large living room, the bathroom, the kitchen, the bedroom with its
single, open and almost empty, closet practically with a single glance.

Betsy could disappear in that house. She usually did so when I'd
finished work for the week and was eager to stuff the cats in the car
and head for town.

And then, I'd turn around, and there she'd be. Sitting in a spot I could
have sworn I'd examined carefully!

My Siamese (RB16) used to do that. To make it harder, she was the same
color as the carpet. MLB

I must admit I didn't check the entrance to the kitchen where I
finally found Rusty.
Didn't think of checking in the coat closet or behind the washing
machine where
he hid when there was a thunder storm. There was no storm last night.
