@twister.southeast.rr.com: I was thinking the same thing--wow, if the water is frozen, how about the cats? Like us they are 90-some percent water. According to this link: http://www.boston.com/globe/search/s...why/011298.htm an average adult human body is only 50 to 65 percent water. |

I have built them a house to live in which they like, but it just dropped to the 20s in the past day or so and their water bowl freezes. I'm guessing I could get some sort of thing made for Bird Baths but was wondering if anyone had anything specific they have used. I'm looking for the Cheapest solution I can find. Any suggestions woudl be great. I got a heated bird bath with a detachable top, and I put that top down on the patio. All the local animals come and drink from it. It's great right after a snow, to see all the different kinds of pawprints coming up to it. Priscilla |

I did look for the heated bowls and they are about $25 - $30 at Petco / PetSmart / etc. I'll pick
one up tomorrow. As for their house, it's not drafty and there's at least 5 cats int here so I'm sure they can keep relatively warm with their body heat and the blankets. Their parents made it through last winter without a house at all so it's an improvement at least. Another suggestion I'd like to suggest is a product I found at Petsmart the other day, it's a flat, hard plastic mat, about 16" x 20". It has a steel wrapped cord and is specifically designed for doghouses. It heats up to 102 degrees. They're kind of expensive, but would be great and safe for your cat house. Sherry |

I'm in an apartment with no way to do outdoor electric, and I sure can't leave a window open to run a line outside! I feed strays and ferals, and worry about the water freezing in the winter -- I change it several times a day, but there are still times it freezes. Is there anything that is *not* electrical that can help keep the water warm enough to keep it from freezing? Thanks! Ginger-lyn |
