Default wet food question!

Hi all, I'm new to this group and had a question about foods...I keep
Purina dry food out for my adult kitty all day and typically treat him
to 1/4-1/2 can wet once a day (this is what my vet recommended to keep
his weight in check etc). My question is this: many wet foods are now
advertising that they dont have ash in them? What exactly is this
nasty sounding ash that apparently IS still included in some wet foods
and is it an absolute no no? I'm a student and not exactly rolling in
the $ so I've been giving my boi Friskees. Upon scrutinizing the label
it does say crude ash min .5% or something of the like. If I cannot
afford wet food that has no ash, should I just stick to the dry? Any
words of wisdom would be appreciated! Hope I dont sound too ignorant
as an avid cat lover!!!

Use the same tool you're using to read rec.pets.cats.community, but
instead of entering rec.pets.cats.community enter
rec.pets.cats.health+behavior

If all else fails, you can look it up at groups.google.com. R.P.C.H+B
tends to be a flame-fest, but Phil P is a wonderful, knowledgeable source.

http://maxshouse.com/Clinical_Nutrit...%20maintenance

This is some of what Phil P has to say about nutrition, paraphrased.
His attitude to "ash" is that it doesn't really exist in the way you
believe. "Ash" is a word chemists give to what's left over after you
burn a crucible of food. It refers to mineral content of the food.
Some minerals are required, some in excess are bad. "Ash" claims can
be an advertising gimmick.
My personal suggestion is that you ask your vet what your cat should
be eating.
