When Tiger purrs there is no sound. If he is on my lap and I am
stroking his throat (which he loves) I can feel the throb. Also, when
he purrs he breathes at double his normal rate so I can see it. Other
than that there is no indication. Strange!

You have had your hearing checked, right? The cats were one of the
first things I couldn't hear.

But there are silent purrs out there.

I haven't but I can hear Amber purr and her purr has always been rather
soft. I know my hearing isn't as good as it once was but after all I am
79 years old! Tigers' meow is pretty soft too which seems odd for a 24
pound cat.

I used to think that Boyfriend could not purr. He is similar to Tiger, he
throbs and occasionally I can hear a very quiet purr which would need a
microphone to pick up.
Unlike KFC, she is a quarter of his size and has a purr fit for a huge cat.
If she is purring upstairs I can hear her downstairs.
She will purr upstairs if she's noticed that her bathroom litterbox is as
pristine as she wants it. She rarely uses it but likes to know it's
puurfect.
She purrs downstairs when she is sitting in front of a warm fire and also
when she is eating food that she likes.
She had minced raw pork tonight and purred. Thank Bast, with encouragement
she ate it all. I have to be there sitting near her otherwise she abandons
it, which is all very well when I am not at work.
I have to keep piling the mince up into a pyramid for her every couple of
minutes and tell her what a good girl she is, she will start eating it again
when I praise her.
I have to go to work on Monday. I will not have time to sit beside her for
an hour in the morning encouraging her appetite. I'll do it when I get home
and stay up late in case she'd like a little more by then.

I give Tiger six pieces of Friskies Dental Diet at bedtime. He likes
this so much that he gets all excited, shakes his tail and meows. His
meow then has a trill which tells me he is purring at the same time.

Jake likes his raw food arraigned that way. For some reason he
doesn't want the bites that are actually touching the plate. Only the
bite at the very top of the pile. Then you get to rearrange it for
him.

He is perfectly healthy so I don't go to the trouble very often.

He is just as bad with things like cooked chicken or turkey. Likes
that hand fed and held just so.

Of course Kayla is happy to clean up any left overs (or not so left
overs given half a chance. Its getting so the first thing anyone says
around here if they are going to try to eat is "Kayla, go lay down".

One of the cats I had as a child could purr audibly up until the occasion
when my father accidentally ran over the cat's leg, breaking it. The
scream the cat let out apparently injured his vocal cords. He made a
full recovery from the broken leg, but, from that point onward, his purr
could be felt but not heard.

My current cat, Cinders, has a very low-volume purr. You have to be
within two or three feet of her to hear it.

Our 14 year old Victor Velcro has always been a cat whose purr you couldn't
hear but could feel when you put your hand on his side. He also has not
ever meowed, he yow's.

Smudge is a very quiet purrer, too. But you know what? She's *always*
purring. At least when I'm nearby, and I like to think that's why.
If I say her name, she purrs. If I say "Good girl", she purrs. If I
scritch her head, she purrs. The cat just likes to be around humans,
and when she gets attention from one, she purrs. You can't hear it unless
you put her head on her ribcage, or your ear to her nose, and then it's
more like rattly breathing. I usually touch her throat lightly to feel
the vibrations, and they're always there.

Roxy doesn't purr every time I touch her or talk to her. She purrs to
let me know she's in the mood for a cuddle. And then it's a medium-
volume but happy, affectionate sound.

Licky's a weird one. He doesn't purr all the time because he's often so
nervous. But when he wants to be petted and I oblige him, he goes into
an ecstatic trance and purrs loud enough to be heard in another room.

TuTu is a very large cat but a silent purrer also. Whenever I sit in my
armchair to watch TV she occupies my lap and I can feel her purring.
However, she does snore loudly when she sleeps. MLB
