Feline leukemia -- how young to test?
Sprocket's vet says he's too young (four weeks at time of vet's appt) to
test for feline leukemia. I forget what she said about when he'd be old enough. Can someone tell me? Thanks! Priscilla |

Can someone tell me? Thanks! Kittens can be tested at any age. FeLV tests detect antigen not antibodies (as FIV tests do) so maternally-derived antibodies or vaccinations don't affect FeLV test results. If you don't know the kitten's history, you should retest him no less than 28 days after you adopted him or after his initial FeLV screening test - even if its negative. |

No, the vet said there were a lot of false negatives at his age. No, the vet said there were a lot of false negatives at his age. Those are the guidelines of the Academy of Feline Medicine Advisory Panel on Feline Retrovirus Testing and Management. What the hell to they know? |
