What a terrible, tragic story.

I wonder if Melissa's poor eyesight made her think the car was further
away, and/or perhaps moving more slowly than it was.

We'll never know.

But, she earned a very, very good place in Heaven, for her sacrifice.

Not much solace for her grieving family, of course.

Wow, that's the saddest thing I've read in a while. I feel so sorry for
her parents, they must really be suffering. I also feel bad for the driver
who hit her - clearly it was an accident, and he must feel really terrible
about it.

I hope the kitty survived, at least!

How terribly sad. :-( A speed limit of 72km/h (45mph) is much too high for a
residential area, about half that would be more reasonable and drivers would
still need to be alert.

OMG! That is so tragic. That little girl is sure to have a very special
place in heaven - bless her little heart!

How terribly sad! What a brave young girl.

I don't understand the speed limit in a residential neighborhood that high
(45MPH). Back home in TN it's always 30MPH where there are houses near the
street, especially when there are school bus stops.

In London near schools amd im built up areas it's 20MPH- they have
this very effective radio ad that starts with someone saying "This is
the noise a child will make if you hit them at 30MPH" followed by
silence and then "This is the noise a child will make if you hit them
at 20MPH" followed by a child crying then the voice says "Which would
you rather hear?"

Although I hate the noise children make when they are crying (a
wailing baby can give me fantasies about going up to the person with
it and saying "Shut your child up before I do!") I think under those
circumstances I wouldn't mind hearing it then again I have never
driven. One lesson years ago led me to conclude the greatest thing I
could do for road safety was use public transport
