I think it was Ingrid Newkirk, President, who made a remark like that a
long time ago. I think her intent was to eliminate the property-like
status of animals and make them "free" entities. I doubt they would ever
actually advocate that stance, as a vast majority of their members have
pets. What drives me crazy is their advocating vegan diets for cats and
dogs. I have a love-hate relationship with PETA, because they've done
some awesome things but sometimes the things they campaign for are so
asinine in the big pictures of animal welfare and rights that it
astounds me.

The whole thing is just for publicity. PETA doesn't really expect the
towns to change their names for a few thousand dollars. However, PETA
does expect their offers to make headlines and prompt internet
discussions. Free publicity.

The only difference between PETA members and mindless automatons is
that PETA members have too much time and money in their hands. I'll
bet that if you looked the average income of all PETA members, they'd
be among the top 1% wealthiest people in the world.

Certainly anecdotal evidence is of limited value, but I have to say my
personal experience would lead me to a contrary conclusion. I have
met a few PETA members and they tended to be younger people making at
best a middling income. Of course, there are some prominent
celebrities that belong; I'm sure they would fit in the top 1%.

Can someone verify this? This is outrageous. I find it impossible to believe

that not everyone is a vegetarian.

That is NOT acceptable to PETA. There is a difference between being a vegan and
a vegetarian. I think they promote a vegan lifestyle. If I recall, the vegan
has more limited menu than the vegetarian..vegans shun the use of animal
related products (leather, wool, certain milks..etc).
