There's that as well- that's about 85.00 pounds isn;t it? That's more
than half what a PTS costs over here- I think (I don't look at the
price list and anyway vets probably don't have that on their price
lists) but I seem to recall Jim saying his mum gave him 40 pounds for
Benj when the time came and it was 35 pounds,, which I make about
$80.00 (depending on exchange rates) and that was only a few months
ago

And yes I would have a second opinion on his ears if you can. I'm
sorry I know we must be adding to the stress of a very stressful
time and only you can decide but I am very uneasy about this whole
thing

It's worse than that, Lesley, 174.00 USB = 117.00 GBP, cleary profeteering
from an owners agony. :-(

*Please,* be with Felix. Hold him and don't let his last moments be a
time of fear. And I would suggest taking him to a different vet. The
cost you listed is outrageous, and I have *never* had a vet charge more
for any service (including euthanasia) when I wanted to be in the room
with my cats. In fact, I suggest that you have a consultation with a
different vet concerning Felix's ears before making the decision to have
him PTS. This vet does not sound like one that I would want to trust
with my beloved cats.

Yes, if your "appointment" is not until Monday, I'd find someone else,
even if it may mean a couple more days of discomfort for Felix. (It
might also mean proper treatment for his tumors, which are apparently
not malignant, just stubborn.) The amount your vet wants to charge you
sounds totally outrageous - the drug they use for euthanasia has been
around for a long time, it is not some pricey new antibiotic, for
heaven's sake!

This is an excellent idea. How terrible that you can't be with your
baby. I, too, wonder just why not. I would be finding another vet.
The crew and I will be purring for both you and Felix....purrrrrrrrrr

Here's an idea you might consider.
At least here in town there are a few mobile vets - I seriously
suggest you see if you have any where you live and see if they can
come to your house.
purrs!

I appreciate everyone's input. I *AM* going to call around on Monday.
But then my vet, who is VERY expensive, has been TED to all six of my
animals. He's the one who did the surgeries on Felix. At the last
visit, he suggested sugery on both ears this time. The first time,
and only one ear, there were so many complications with healing that
Felix had to stay at TED's for an extra 9 or so days. And the final
bill was around $3K. So, looking at my options and what funds I have
available, I can't do it. And in my heart, I don't think it'll help
b/c they grow back so quickly. I have also researched this type of
tumor(s) on the Internet AND have ran it across my brother's best
friend who happens to be a vet too. Bottom line is the tumors are
sometimes manageable and sometimes not.

This is so hard!!

Just called TED to set up an appt. to bring Felix in. Actually, I'm
not bringing him in. A tech will get him out of my car while I'm
inside doing paperwork. Tech will go to a side door so I won't see
Felix again. But here's the thing, it's $174 to have Felix put
down. If I wanted to be in the room and stay with Felix, it's
more. My God!! You want to be with your loved one and they charge
you MORE to do it. No mercy at all.

I'm glad I don't have YOUR vet! I don't recall what mine charged, but if
it had been anything LIKE that high, I'd certainly remember! (I'm not
sure he charged at all, when the cat had been a regular patient.)
You definitely have my heartfelt sympathy - it's hard enough to make such
a decision without having to decide how much you can afford to pay for the
procedure! (All the vets I've ever had were more than sympathetic with my
grief - certainly there was no question of my being allowed to be with my
baby, stroking him/her while the shot took effect.)

I don't want to add to your sorrow by mentioning it, but if he's THAT
money-grubbing, I'd be tempted to seek another opinion about the ear
tumors, too! Certainly I'd find another vet for any remaining or future
pets (and be sure the vet knew why).

The tumors are painful and they do not go away. I have already sought a 2nd
opinion as well as research on the internet. Even more so, the surgery left
him in agony.

Am going to see about the mobile unit. so down

And yes, I am going to look for a new vet. I love mine, but I can't afford
his prices. Not anymore.

Laurie,

What vet is this that is charging extra? All the ones I have visited
haven't charged me for being there! Even the E-Clinic on Bridge St.
doesn't charge extra. Please let me know so I don't EVER go there!
They sound like right royal a$$es. Can you call around and explain the
situation to other vets? I couldn't stand it if I couldn't be there!

That sucks. I'd be calling other vets for price and presence
comparison. Does the price include individual cremation? I wouldn't
put it past them to spring that on you as an extra.

Jo

Also, have you contacted Cornell about it? I would think that they would
be able to use laser treatments on them, which shouldn't be as painful
as what he has gone through.

Patti
(Cornell is only an hour to hour 1/2 from here - Laurie lives just down
the road a piece from me.)

Hey Mish,

The one over by Radisson. I guess he figures everyone who lives in that
nice area are millionaires. That's where I lived with my now ex. This vet
is very GOOD, but expensive. I wish folks would stop trashing him.

The thing is I don't want him going through anymore stuff. NO MORE PAIN.
Laser is expensive too. And no matter what, they'll grow back.

I haven't seen people trashing him. They are trashing his POLICIES
that are causing you such pain. He might be a great vet in many other
ways but what he has done, possibly without thinking about it, to you
is terrible.

Give Felix our love and purrs.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Mousies acting cheeky like we weren't even there.
I watched birdies dancing and singing right by our front gate..
All those critters will be gone soon, like dew in sun..
Time to pounce.

This is going to sound callous, but I suspect it's like this. If
you're not with your animal, they can use a euthanising "bin" - a
gas chamber. Not that the animals suffer any pain, of course. I
gather it's an anaesthetic gas that's used. If you want to be
with him, they'll have to give a lethal injection instead. Of
course, that costs more.

I do so hope Felix's journey to the bridge is a swift and happy
one. There'll be no more pain for him, but it'll be painful for
you. :-(
