Alas not. She was under the living room couch this morning, and that's
where I pushed the morning's food bowl. She was still there when I got
home for work, and at least the food had been eaten.

My housekeeper just arrived and I lifted the couch, whereupon kitty ran
back to under the desk in this computer room. My housekeeper is now
stretched out under the desk, trying to give her some arm's-length
affection.

This is one tough situation.

Art

It's not tough. Leave her alone and stop pressing her.
It took me years with Boyfriend to get him on my lap of his own accord and
now he thinks I'm the best thing in the world.
Anyway, it's far too soon to pick her up and she might never like it.
Boyfie does not like to be picked up so I don't (unless TED time) which
reinforces his idea of being picked up is dangerous.

I agree. Edgar and Agatha have been with us over 2 years, and we still
can't pick them up (unless we corner them
and pour them into their carriers for a trip to TED). They are both very
affectionate, and she will sit on my lap to watch TV or the computer
screen, but picking up is a no-no. When we do pick them up, they don't
fight or scratch -- they just go limp and play dead.

He did used to faint on the vet's table from fear but that was a while ago
and not hopefully when he gets his jabs very soon.

He is very afraid of going to the vet and I try not to - but sometimes you
have to.

I think I dread it more than the cats. Marlo shakes with fear and
promises to kill more waterbugs if I just take her home. Nipsy whines
continuously and so piteously that it's difficult to continue to the
vet. He is by far the best whiner I've ever had. Scooter is a mixture
of curious and trying to bolt.

But the fear of getting into the carrier is replaced by the joy of
getting back into the carrier at the vet! Oh, we can't get back in the
carrier fast enough. And then the joy of getting out of the carrier
back in our own home!

Put out her food and water and go about your daily life. She'll come
out when she's good and ready. Don't keep chasing her down and
trying to get her out from under any place where she feels safe. She
needs a place to feel SAFE, and you're constantly bugging her about
that. So just leave her alone and give her time.

Seconded!

Aye!

It took me months to get Boyfie inside the house and years to get him to
trust me. It's too soon to pick her up IMO.
I don't even pick him up now as he doesn't like it. He's happy to get on my
lap but it has to be his own idea.
The only time I ever pick him up is from his duvet in his bedroom to go to
TED, and he knows that, so if I go there he is straight under the bed.
It will happen next week.

I don't know any cats that like to be picked up and held. They're sort
of control freaks and that puts them too much out of control. Of
course, all cats are weird so I'm sure there are some that like it, I
just never met one.

My Bud loves to be picked up - he is a BIG boy (Maine Coon mix) and will stand on his hind legs, reaching up to me to be held. (He reaches up as far as my hip, and I am 5'10") Buzzy, Beebee, Bert, Sasquatch, Teddy (sometimes), Jacob, Bright Eyes, Fluffernutter, Wu all will ask to be picked up and cuddled. The rest vary from climbing on your lap to "don't touch me! AAAAH! Human cooties!!"

Several friends of mine have well socialised cats who've never had "issues"
of any kind, and they are happy to be picked up at any time.
I don't pick Boyfie up unless I need to. It makes him dangle limply, certain
that he's about to have a very bad experience.
Like tomorrow..

Oh, dear. I hope it goes smoothly! (For you, anyway - I don't expect
Boyfie to consider any of it "smooth".)

Most cats I've had don't like to be picked up, but all are/have been
affectionate cuddlers, each in their own way. It would be nice to be able
to pick up and hold a cat, but I get plenty of loving from them without
that.

Smudge would let me hold her for about 20 seconds before she started
squirming to get down. But she used to let my partner hold her for 10 or
15 minutes at a time. I used to get really jealous! But who was there
for Smudge when my ex *abandoned* her?? Hmm?

OK, that's a tad misleading, as it makes it sound like I made a big
sacrifice to keep Smudge. When I got an email from the ex saying, "I'm
moving into a place where I can't take Smudge... would it be a big
imposition if you kept her?" I wrote back, "No, I can keep her. I hate
to break the two of them up anyway." But in reality, I was dancing
around the room!
