Our vet has always allowed us in with the critters, both feline &
canine. Even on the "final exam" (and they've never charged us for that
one).

Yes, I have always been in the exam room with my furbabies. I held them in
my lap and soothed them when I had to take them in to send them to the
Bridge. Like yours, my vet has never charged for that procedure. I have
been amazed to read about charges from some vets.

The vet where I had to have Smudge put down did charge me - quite a lot
as I remember. I don't usually go to them because they are money grubbers.
But they also have a good vet staff and state-of-the-art equipment, so
for something serious, like wanting a second opinion on a terminal cancer
diagnosis, I trusted them even though I know they would overcharge me.

For routine care, I go somewhere else. I don't know whether they charge
for euthanasia, though.

We do have to pay for that, but unlike a normal consultation where we have
to pay immediately, we are allowed to rush out to our cars weeping our
hearts out and have to pay later.
Two weeks is allowed, otherwise you'll be chased for the money.

The place I took Smudge to had me pay *beforehand* - that way I could
run weeping out to my car without worrying about payment. And then I
wouldn't get a very unpleasant bill in the mail a couple of weeks later,
reminding me of the whole nightmare.

Yes, that's the way my vet did. A few days later I received a sympathy
card, signed by the entire staff.

It depends on whether you know beforehand, sometimes I suspected it and
sometimes I didn't. But we always have to pay for euthanasia. We never have
to pay forward for it.
I remember my vet running after me to my car when I had to make the final
decision about one of my dogs who had cancer of the face. I took him to
Cambridge vet school (best for that) and he got chemo. Didn't work for
long.

He was so worried that I was so upset after I'd witnessed his death that he
did not want me to drive home in the state I was in.
Nice thought. But I still got the bill.

I've always had to pay for euthanasia usually straight afterwards and
it's the one thing I don't like about my vet's. It's not very big so
once the deed is done you have to go into the waiting room and pay in
front of people waiting to be seen- wherever possible they try to
arrange it so it's at the end of the day and the last few people are
there for the same reason I gather but that isn't always possible-
it's pretty horrible to be waiting with the cats and see someone
staggering out the clinic room, sobbing their eyes out

The vets I took Dunzi too should be struck off and not just for what
that vet said to me when she was trying to hardsell cremation. Not
long after Dunzi went I was telling a friend about it and she said
she'd been there once when she first moved to the area and while she
was waiting with her cat some students from the nearby university
brought a dog in- dog had been hit by a car and was in a bad way and
the nurse said if they didn't pay up front they wouldn't do anything-
they pointed out they were all students and it wsn't their dog they
were just trying to help and the nurse shrugged and suggested they get
a cab to the Blue Cross at Victoria if they could get one to take
them, they pointed out no cab would take the dog as it was bleeding
and anyway they didn't have the fare at this point my friend stood up
and handed over her credit card saying she'd pay for the dogs
treatment (which turned out to be a trip over the Bridge) and the
students could pay her back (which they did in dribs and drabs) when
it was all over she turned to the nurse and said she'd only done that
because she could see as could anyone the poor dog was suffering and
as her cat only needed his booster she was taking her business
elsewhere and walked out

She's with the same practice as me but funnily another friend of mine
uses this practice and thinks they are wonderful...

When we lost Dunzi I notified Kylie and a few days later I got a card
from her and the staff with the Rainbow Bridge poem on it even through
I'd taken her to another vets 'cos they were closed and I was in a
panic- the other vets who were money grabbing so and so's (I have no
problem with the technical care but you know the vet didn't even
stroke her) didn't even send a card I was crying and it was like
"We've finished for the day, please go and pay the bill and get outta
here", The only time the vet deigned to even converse with me was to
hard sell a very pricy individual cremation

That is outrageous! My vet cried with me (though not as hard) when I had to
have Nanki-Poo, and later Lindy, PTS.

Agreed. Cold and callous. [My dog] Sampson's vet cried, too, and hugged
me. And then a few weeks later her boss gave my name & address to that
pharmeceutical company for free samples of his medication. I was furious!
(Thinking about it now, I'm still furious.) He owned the clinic. He knew
enough to look up the medication with my name. But he didn't bother to
check to see they'd euthanized my dog the month before. Grrrrrrrr.

It looks like a big needle to have the chip put in but Boyfie didn't seem
to notice it and he is a huge wimp at the vet. He collapses on the table
and faints, normally.

He did go like a pancake, he always does, but he didn't notice his chip
being put in and didn't faint. I looks like it should hurt but seems not.
