For those with clear skies (not here) you can observe the planet Venus
cross in front of the sun this afternoon. It starts a little after 6 PM
eastern time. This won't happen again for 105 years. Be sure to have
eye protection such as welder's goggles.

Didn't this just happen a few years ago? And the next one isn't for 105
years? That's a pretty irregular schedule. One thing I've always noticed,
though, is that when there's an unusual celestial event, people will say,
"this won't happen for anotherbig number of years!" and then I read
about it coming up again a few years later.

You might be right, of course. And I'm not really challenging your
statement. It just always seems, to me, like these things happen a lot
more often than we're told they're going to happen.

I figure it's like the weather. Transits of Venus, eclipses, etc., are just
not possible to predict more than a few days ahead, due to chaos theory and
leprechauns and other factors.

I assume you're joking - I think those things are very predictable.
I just think my sources (ie, the people who say "this is the last time
in our life we can see this") might be mistaken.

You might live another one hundred and five years, but I am not counting on it.

It is quite possible that those that are small children now will be around
next time.

I didn't see this one because of persistent clouds. I did see the one
in 2004. Last night I watched the NASA channel which was showing the
whole thing.

It was howling wind and driving rain for the morning (the transit
happened between about 8am and 2pm for us), although it was supposed to
clear up for the afternoon.

I'd made a pinhole camera to watch, but quickly discovered that I'd need
a very large box for the sun to appear as more than a pinpoint of light.

But it just so happened I was there on lunch break when a cow orker
dragged out his proper telescope with a solar filter, and I was the one
looking down it glumly when the sun poked out from the cloud for a
matter of seconds and I saw it. The next person had to wait for another
10 minutes before there was another briefest of cloud breaks.

I don't know if anyone else saw it, because my lunch break finished and
I had to go back tot he office.

The irony of the whole day, though, was that by 3pm (when the transit
was well and truly over) the sky was blue, and I had multiple pin-hole
camera images of the sun all through my office.

Still, I am one of the rare ones in this patch of Australia that
actually got to see it 'live' rather than through a webcast. And for
that I feel truly blessed.
