We had part of this discussion yesterday. Charlie walked into the living room and
said "You know Christmas is going to be interesting this year" to which I replied,
"Oh my God, we'll never keep her out of the tree" Both talking about 7 month old
Rosie without even mentioning her name. We will still put the tree up, with the top
wired to a hook in the ceiling. And the nicer breakable ornaments that have survived
other cats and the grandkids may stay in the box. The little feathered bird
ornaments may stay in the box as well.

We drove by the lot selling x-mas tree yesterday. We usually get our
tree after thankgiving or the first week of december. Even though we are
not christians, we love putting up a tree and decorating it with the
many ornaments we've accumulated over the years. Given the pagan origins
of the tree tradition, I think it's ok for us non-christians to have
one. I mentioned casually, "Fez is going to be at the top of that
tree ten seconds after we bring it into the house". That got us thinking.
Perhaps not this year. We've talked about it and we think Fez is too
frisky to be trusted with a tree. The boy is crazy! And he gives Feline
Stuborness a whole new dimension. Here's a typical Fez moment: I'm
carving a roasted chicken on the kitchen counter. Fez jumps up and tries
to get close to the action. I reprimand him and put him on the floor.
Half a second later, he's back on the counter, smelling the chicken. I
reprimand him again and put him on the floor. By the time I turn to face
the chicken, he's about to take a bite of it. I call to Tom to come help
me with the little beast, so he comes and grabs him and takes him away.
Five seconds later he's back at it. Did I mention he's stubborn? Sigh.
So, we're going to skip the tree this year, hoping that by next year
he'll have stopped being such a stubborn kitten.

My parents had a kitten thst sounded a lot like Fez, into everything. We were
worried about their xmas tree too. The cat didn't get into it at all. They
did put cat proof orniments need the bottom branches and no tinsel.

We are childless now, and put the tree up for the cats more thann for us! I
wouldn't tell this to any other group of people, but they *love* Christmas! I
swear they get so excited when we drag the tree out and get the ornaments down
from the attic.
Maybe do some "cat friendly" decorations that would also double as toys instead
of a tree till next year!!

We thought that Squeak and Huey would be death on the Christmas tree
last year, but the only one who climbed it was QC, who always climbs the
tree at one time or another. We just pick the thing up after she brings
it down and set it back up again. We don't know about Honor, she does
tend to be pretty wild (she stalked my toes this afternoon) but she
won't keep us from putting up a tree. However we never use tinsel, and
all of our ornaments are unbreakable.

That sounds like a good idea. Cats aside, I think it's perfectly all
right for you to have a tree. There are so many traditions connected
with Christmas, and I like the fact that anyone can choose to share one
or more of those traditions.

That should be quite nice: a potted evergreen - bigger than you could
ever have indoors - with a lot of tiny cheap lights (I found them for
about $0.035 apiece when I bought mine several years ago). With care
they will last a number of seasons. Plant the tree, pot and all, when
the season is over and dig it up next year.

Quite a few of our "safe" ornaments are cheap wooden toys we hang on the tree. They
look pretty good.
