They will be pampered for the rest of their lives, however long or short.

But it's going to be interesting to see how Waffles, Francis and Marble take
to their new housemates!

I'll bet! The cats will no doubt be more afraid of the chickens than
vice versa. Do they still have sharp beaks? If so, no reason for them
to fear the cats.

Good for you!!

The (MY) cats were initally very interested. She has a fab photo of
all my 5 cats sitting on the fence, with the other neighbourhood
cats,
Basil, Louis and Fuzz (So 8 cats) all in a long line, craning over,
going "WTF are THEY??!!!" as they watched the chickens.

Any chance of getting that photo scanned?

I was hoping to se it, too. Sounds hilarious.

I would love have seen it also! The other day, Ernie started chattering
at the birds, and she was acting VERY interested in what was outside. My
DH looked out and said "Oh my god! Look at the turkeys!" There were at
least 6 VERY large turkeys in our side yard. We called a couple of our
crew over to have a look-see, and their reactions were priceless! They
were like "yeah mom, so what.. WHAT THE HECK ARE THOSE?!!" Boyce went
into a crouch, like he was going to try to get them, and Jacob decided
it was better to run before the turkeys got him. Ernie just stayed there
chattering away. I think she was thinking "here birdie, birdie or
whatever you are." What a crew!

LOL! I remember when I used to go for walkies with Nikki, we sometimes
came upon some pheasants ambling about in the woods. Nikki would always
crouch down and get ready to attack. I'd just laugh at her and ask her
what she thought she was going to do with them? She was a very small
cat, so about one fifth of the pheasants' size. But she believed she
could take on anything.

OTOH, we once stumbled on a hedgehog snuffling about in the brush. I was
prepared to hold Nikki back from it, but she just completely ignored it.
Acted like there simply was nothing there. Smart cat. She didn't want to
get near all those sharp spines. I don't know how she could know that,
because AFAIK, she had never seen a hedgehog before.

battery hen. Any eggs they choose to lay for me will be an added bonus.

It's why I've only bought organis free-range eggs for a long, long time now.

I'm *sooo* excited!

That's so cool! I had no idea there was a placement plan for ex-
battery hens. It's just so neat to hear those poor things will live
out their lives free of suffering.
I admit I don't know much about chickens. But my aunt went in for
surgery on Monday, and she has a bantam rooster and asked me to take
care of it, and the dogs. I've been very faithful to keep close watch
on them. But I swear, that chicken is a moody little thing. I've
learned this about chickens this week: If he runs toward me, he wants
his food. If he runs toward me with one wing dropped, he is fixing to
chase me to the car. YES. I let a 6-inch chicken chase me. This was
after he attacked the calf of my leg the first time.

There are few things on earth as brave for their size and a banty rooster.
My Grandmother used to keep them because the regular hens would just let
the wild animals drag them off. The banty's would raise holy hell.

KFC is still prime suspect for hoovering up a couple of chicks that
squeezed out between the bars of the run they were in (half an inch)
That was a few years ago when she was in her hey-day - I wouldn't have
trusted her at that time with small bantams either.
She never showed any interest in my large fowl though.

Boyfriend is a complete wuss around my chickens. He averts his eyes when
he goes past them ;-) He is terribly afraid of Francis Drake. Boyfie likes
to accompany me when I am feeding the poultry, but when I get to the orchard
it's "I'm outa here if you're gonna let that big duck out"
Little does he know that dear Francis is a wuss too g

I've heard of giving people the bird BUT...:-P Congratulations on the arrival

My parents used to talk about the "banty hens" they kept when they lived in
the city. And one rooster with attitude issues. I think "banty" refers to a
small breed of chicken, but this rooster strutted around and acted like the
popular percetion of a Rottweiler. they had a picture (long since
disintegrated) of this tiny rooster attacking the mail carrier, and I was
told this went on regularly.

Blessed be,
