Reviving this old post for people who come across it searching for such things...
Some people believe cats drink plenty of water on their own. This is not true. You know how finicky cats are about their food, and the same goes for their water. Why wouldn't it?! A cat will avoid water which isn't fresh, and will drink less the worse it tastes.
People prefer water which doesn't taste of chlorine and other chemicals, and so do cats. So if your cat's water doesn't taste good, s/he can easily become dehydrated.
Do whatever you can to entice your cat to drink water. I discovered by trial-and-error that my own elderly cat enjoys watered-down canned food. She now drinks all the water and leaves the food behind if she isn't very hungry. She had urinary tract problems all her life, according to her prior owner. But now that she drinks plenty of water, her problems have all gone away. So now she gets her water changed at least twice each day, plus a big serving of really wet cat food each day.
Last year I had to have a different elderly kitty put down due to kidney failure. I cannot help but wonder if she'd be alive today had I enticed her to drink more, thus keeping her kidneys flushed out.
