I'm wondering how many other people's cats are very strange when it
comes to eating. My cat wakes me up at 6:00 a.m. everyday, whining
constantly. I have to get up and go to the kitchen, where there is
plenty of food in his bowl. What's more, he doesn't want fresh food-
as soon as I walk in the kitchen and stay close to him, he chows down.
It happens for his evening eating as well.

Anyone heard of this?

Smokey likes to be petted while she eats. The more you pet the more she
purrs and the faster she eats. And her eating is pretty impressive without
the petting.

How old is smokey I would think if she is fairly young and has developed this habit it mite be due to a psychological reason such as she needs reassurance she is aloud to eat the food or she has an anxiety issue maybe as a kitten she only got used to being feed with someone there to comfort her .or a physical dependence and strong routine I had a similer issue with a stray cat she became very selective of when she would eat and she would only do it if u were telling her it was okay and trying to sooth her or she would hide.

If u want to break this routine try these options. Slowly stop petting her during feeding stand at the far end of the room and talk and then slowly move further away from the bowl into different rooms or the hall making sure she can still c u or train with a command such as eat pat her once say eat and move away repeat
