Tweed I need advice
"Lesley" wrote in message ... Sorry to ask but you're probably the best person to ask. A friend of mine works in a theatre group that does a lot of work with small children and he just posted this on FB "Out of the thousands of children visiting the theatre last week one little girl still haunts me. She was smaller than her classmates, frail and looked malnourished. Her hair was matted and unkempt. Her white polo shirt was dirty and discoloured. Worst of all she had bruises on her small arms, the size of adult finger marks. " He doesn't know her name although he can find out what school she is from. None of us know where he could go although we all think he should raise this- should he talk to the school? Police? Social Services? I could ignore smaller, frail looking and looking malnourished- she might have an underlying medical condition but the bruises? The matted hair and dirty clothes? There may be a reason maybe she's even known to child protection but he should follow this through do you think? Lesley _____________ Sorry I wasn't here to answer this when you first posted. Yes, of course she should follow this through and get in touch with her local SSD child protection team. Never be afraid to raise concerns about children, we would rather have unfounded allegations which can be investigated and go NFA (no further action) than miss even one. So the short answer to whether she should follow this through is YES, YES, YES. Please encourage her to do so as soon as possible. If she's worried about the parents finding out who reported them we never reveal our sources or she can even do it anonymously. I'm surprised that if she looks so neglected with matted hair and dirty clothes and with bruises that the school have not acted by reporting her already. Maybe they have, but another call of concern won't hurt. Never leave it to someone else. Child protection is everyone's business. Report any child you feel concerned about. Yes, it royally p*sses off the parents if the allegation is unfounded (and we used to get malicious allegations from neighbours who have fallen out, but more commonly during an acrimonious divorce) but never hesitate to get in touch with your local team. If it saves even one.. Tweed |

He's spoken to the school, he's not the only person to have raised concerns about this girl and the matter is with social services but the teacher thanked him because they need every statement of concern they can get as the mother isn't co-operating with social services and denies anything is going on Lesley ___________ Hmm, she won't get far with non-co-operation I can assure you of that. I hope social services acts quickly and thoroughly. There have been numerous cases in the U.S. where social services have done an exemplary job, but there have also been numerous instances where they have failed to take action when they should have--including tragedies ending death. Staffing of social services always seems to be inadequate for the case load. MaryL and that is exactly the reason why I took the opportunity for early retirement. Council budget cuts (save x million a year on your budget) was the instruction from Central government to each local council, and and although I stayed a while, I saw people leaving and not being replaced, clerical staff being reviewed, are they really necessary, can we get rid of some of them? No we can't, they are essential. It was at that point that I decided to ship out, knowing that it would be 2 and a half years before my government pension kicked in. That was in 2010 and the good news is that in theory my first pension arrived in my bank account yesterday. Happy dance. Tweed |
